Title: Power steering for a '93 YJ ?

Hello Everyone... I just joined your Club & am looking forward to the events etc :)

I just bought a '93 YJ that has a steering problem. There is atleast 6" of play before the wheels actually turn, which makes it very "interesting" to drive....moreover unsafe...and better yet won't pass the insurance inspection I have to do...

So my question is; how difficult will it be to convert the non-power assist steering to power assist? I have to pull the gearbox anyway soooooo

I'd need a power assist pump, gearbox, longer belt, oil pressure sensor and reservoir....am I missing anything? Also, since I have to fix all of that, how hard is it to put a tilt steering column in it too?

Lastly, where is a good local parts shop that will have these parts on the shelf or a used parts store?

The specs on my ride are: '93 YJ , 2.5L, 33" tires, 4" lift

Thanks for your help!  I have 12 days to fix everything before the inspection...then I'll need someone to teach me how to drive it lol

You should be able to get everything you need from Jeep Stuff 403-936-5862
With that much play in the steering, sounds like you will need to change the steering box anyway

for the 2.5l a box from an xj will fit also

Is anyone else sure that an XJ box will fit? I would rather make sure than waste my money.

The XJ pump will not fit because it has the integral resevoir but the box should be okay

i know this post is old but still.


you can make the XJ one fit, you just have to modify the airbox. it wont' fit because it gets in the way. this is what i did

but actually, i took the airbox right out and went to a K&N.

Thanks! I found this article that explains how to put on a Durango/Dakota box and you end up with a 3.0:1 ratio.
