Title: Ax-5 to Automatic Swap
Post by: Axemanjay on November 19, 2009, 12:40:27 PM
Hey Guys...

I am entertaining swapping the AX-5 out of the YJ and converting it to automatic.

I know it could be a chore it itself, but, what tranny would best fit in with minimal fabbing??

if it's an ax5 tranny it's behind a 2.5 write, i don't think they ever made an auto fo that motor because it;s too weak but if they do i would like to do this swap too because it suck trying to dump a cluch when your flexing out.

You should be able to bolt anything to the 2.5 that was on a 4.0L/258. The AW4 is a nice tranny but computer controlled so wiring it in would be a pita. Maybe a chrylser 904(or is it 999) from a YJ with a 258?.

Maybe now is a good time to ditch the 4 banger....

I thought about ditching the 4 squirrels but I just rebuilt the thing top to bottom.

Only got 2 weeks of driving on her yet.

If I remember, you can get a Dakota bellhousing, and swap an AX-15 behind it?  If so....why not the Dakota bellhousing and then an auto (AW4)?

I read somewhere that the older xj, commanche, and others with the 2.5 came with a AW4, could it make sense to bolt a AW4 to a 2.5 yj?

AW4 never came in a dakota and the AW4 case in all one piece, bell housing doesn't come off seperatly.

You should realize that in addition to the tranny you will probably need a steering column with shifter(or some sort of floor mounted shifter), all the shift linkages, new driveshafts,  t-case, crossmember....... thats just off the top of my head.

the bell housing does come off...I've been reading this guys write up, and he had a few issues, but figured it out.  I just have to get the parts

I have also been looking at putting a complete s10 4.3 setup in the YJ.

I have a line on a complete donor blazer, and besides motor/tranny mounts, is there any other huge issues to look out for?

I will put engine/tranny/transfer case, and axles/DS in the YJ.

if your using an S10 blazer for parts only the rear diff is usefully seeing as the front is IFS
