doin tie rod ends for a guy i know in a cherokee.. well thats what im suposed to be doin currently realizing whoever worked on this jeep last is an IDIOT and forgot to tighten the lugnuts at all... SOOOO now the rim is fubar'd and all the studs seem to be broken out of the hub or something, but the wheel is somehow stayin on as i cannot unthread the lugnuts as the studs just spin... any idea's?
-
A snipe on the lug nuts and break the studs off. You need to replace them anyways.
-
tried that they just spin can turn em both ways by finger
-
thats what i was tryin to say the rim is toast as well as the studs
-
get a coulpe GOOD metal blades, cut the rim, then when you got room cut the studs then get a new wheel bearing and a rim, most likly studs too
-
Let the weight of the vehicle down onto the studs, that might be enough to get the studs loose. Barring that keep driving it till the studs wear down and break and the wheel falls off. :D
You might be able to unbolt the brake caliper bracket from the knuckle, undo the three unit bearing bolts, undo the axleshaft nut and slide the whole thing off.
-
Thats almost what i was thinkin cLAY just figured id see if anyone else would agree with me ill try letting the jeep back down and try to get them off.. the guy was complaining it had wobble so he suspected tie rod ends... pretty sure i solved his problem lol
-
He's going to need a new unit bearing as the holes for the studs will stripped out. Don't forget 5 new lug nuts either.
-
the studs themselves might be turning in their hols so turning the nuts does nothing. do you have access to a torch?
-
You could drill out the studs/lugnuts, use vise grips to hold the lug nut, but a torch would be real quick. Both sides fubarred?
-
nah just the passenger side
-
Hold the rim as straight as possible and weld it to the studs.
Toss a hubcap on, charge him through the nose for the repairs and call it done.
-
Try letting the vehicle sit on the wheel, if there is enough force on the studs, it might hold them enough to get the nuts off.
just an idea!
-
you could try to tighten the lugs with an impact, if you can get them to tighten up and stop spinning. Then dril out and tighten again. They should snap off.
-
can you get behind the rim enough to tack the lugs to the break rotor? usualy you can get at one lug nut and turn the wheel to get at all of them
-
What would I do ?

That will work if its a steel rim, otherwise it could get very messy.
-
i would just drill out the studs, you are going to have to buy a new hub anyway, start with a small bit and work your way up untill the nuts come off.
it will take a while. ( a torch works good too,)
if the holes on the rim are ovalled out, Alberta rim, on goddard avenue will be able to fix them up. about $100 I would think,
