Title: Car seat in a TJ?
Post by: Razor on December 12, 2009, 05:25:24 PM
I can't fight it anymore. I want another TJ. But, will a baby seat fit in the back seat? She would only be back there occasionally as our main baby hauler will be my duramax. I'll be looking for a cheap TJ in the $5000 range, so a 97-99 non-unlimted. Just need to know if it will fit at all or not even close???

Yes they fit, but are a pain in the a$$ to get the kid in and out of. Give the kid a helmet, cause they'll need it! And don't plan on getting rid of the side steps either. Older TJ do NOT have teathers for anchoring the seat YOU NEED THESE.. Take it into a dealership and they will install them for free. None of my TJ's hade them except for my '03.

In the summer, its a breeze getting them in and out of the back.  In the winter not so much.

To get the dealer to install the tethers, the vehicle has to be 10 years old or newer.  I can give you a part number for the tether for the 97/98.  It just bolts to a "foot" on the bottom of the seat.  For 99 and newer they have a reinforced floor area where the tether mounts too.

You will likely find that the rear facing baby seat will need to go behind the passenger seat in order to give it enough room.  The front seat is not supposed to touch the car seat for it to work properly.  Once they are forward facing, they are find.  Plenty of room.  They might kick your seats though.

They are not practical, but I won't get rid of my Jeep.

we used the rear facing seat in the TJ until the kid was about 10 months old.  i would slip him in through the passenger side.  it was not a problem.
the problem is all the crap that come along, stroller, high chair, diaper bag etc... but its managable.

we plan to use the 97 TJ later on with 2 forward facing seats...someday

I use my 97 TJ with 2 forward facing seats. Its not that bad. I dump the passsenger seat forward and climb in to buckle the kids in. A mild pain for the joy of owning a jeep

That's the answer i was looking for. Now i can start looking. I'd love a JK Unlimited Rubicon or even a LJ Unlimted Rubicon, but i don't think i can stretch the budget to aquire either. So an older 4.0L tj will suffice. Thanks all for your input, hope to see you on the trails again(sooner than later).
