Title: Which Diff
Post by: t-man on December 24, 2009, 10:28:39 AM
I have a chance to buy a Cherokee donor/parts vehicle.  I am looking for one with an 8.25 or a D44.  The one I found has a 175mm diff, I cannot get to it to see it, but call the dealership and that is the diff the parts guy said would be in the rear.  How do I know what diff this is as none of the stock Cherokee axles had a 175mm ring gear, the D30 is listed as a 186mm Axle.

D44 only came in a few 87s, 88s and is rumoured to appear in 89s.  my buddy has an 89pioneer with the D44 rear.  if the jeeps pre 96' the 8.25 in those jeeps is no better than the D35 anyway.  if its a 97+  then the 8.25 has the 29 spline axles and is better than the stock D 35........

From what I have read, the D44 was in 87-89 plus some in 90-92 (but in smaller numbers).  Although everywhere you look the information, on when and how many Cherokee's had the D44, is different.

My 87 XJ Wagonner has a D44, but never had a trailer package...bought another 87 2dr XJ for parts with a D44 and it does have a tow package....I think the D44's were pretty random in those two years.
