Title: XJ or ZJ???
Post by: Brooneg on January 02, 2010, 09:00:58 PM
I have a good line on both an XJ and A ZJ.  Biggest difference is that the ZJ is loaded, with a standard tranny, while the XJ is a sprot with the automatic.  It will be a daily driver, and a wheeling truck.  2 - 4" lift, and maybe 32" at the biggest for tires.  It will not be anything huge, but what is the best for regular driving and wheeling?  Any thoughts?

Cherokee has more after market support and it'll be easier to upgrade.  ZJ would take a bit more determination.

Don't get a ZJ, trust me. I'd go with the XJ if I had the option. While they look great with a lift, the Grands are probably the most expensive Jeeps to modify other than the Commanders.

I would have to agree however a stick zj is pretty rare. To be honest the only reason I got a zj is because I got a really good deal on it from my old man, if it wasn't for the price I would of got a xj.

whats wrong Fras?  ZJ issues?

doesn't matter which one you go with. running a 31 on or 32 on either jeep can be done with a a simple 3" lift.  it will be cheaper for a XJ though.  if yuou have an XJ with the auto AW4 tranny and 242 tcase, thats a good call, but a ZJ with an AX15 ain't bad either.

i like ZJs so i say ZJ. XJ will be easier in every way though

No problems but for a DD and light wheeler it might be a bit much. The cost of parts is so much higher than other models and you know some can be finicky with lifts.

Agreed, XJs are easier/cheaper to lift and the bodies on the ZJs seem to take damage easier. ZJs have more interior rooom but that translates into a bigger heavier vehicle. V8 option on the ZJs is nice but with a standered in the ZJ you'll get a 4.0. I personally think the ZJs extra weight makes them doggy with a 4.0.

You sure that ZJ has a stick? Any of the manual tranny ZJs I've seen were more moderatly loaded. One even had manual windows...

The ZJ is a Laredo so its pretty loaded... no leather but all power options... and its definitely a 4.0/AX-15/231

XJ's have more parts available and are cheaper to lift... however this is the 2nd XJ I've owned and I do 95% daily driving.  My old XJ was great for wheeling, but when I go to the ski hill and pickup friends, I wish I had a ZJ or WJ.  V8 for power on the highway and WJ for more interior space and bigger rear doors.
