Title: 94 grand wandering
Post by: 4Banger_madness on January 17, 2010, 11:47:51 AM
i built a 94 grand for my sister this summer with about 4.5 inch lift we we took it on a huge road trip from red deer through south dacota moad vagas and california and back up to canmore in august with no problems. now she has been driving it since then but in  the last month she has been saying it pulls, so she brought it down and i checked the front end and did a wheel alignment at work. then we tried going into banff for food and i cant keep it in my lane! anyone have anythoughts/ input?

Is the steering wheel straight? Are all your bushings in the steering good? What lift setup does it have?

front end is tight    the front has procomp fixed lowers 6" cherokee springs so they sit lower on the grand rear suspension i have rustys adjustable arms both top and bottom and 4.5 " cherokee front springs.   i extended the sway bar links myself and made a rea track bar bracket and drilled a hole for the front one the rear braket is tight as well

With that many miles on it with bigger tires those wheel bearings should be pretty much toast....

Anything unusual happen to it that could have caused something to get bent? Did you check over the rear end? Any brakes dragging? Who did the alignment? Any DW?

BTW is the shift button on your keyboard broken?

Try swapping tires, been fooled by tire pull more than once... They are bad for front track bars too...

Try checking the LCA cam bolts if loose the axle can twist a little and make your steering vague.

Does it pull one way or wander?
What toe in was the align ment done to?
Even if they feel tight I would consider the wheel bearings if they are old.
maybe try fooling around with toe in if everything else checks out. I usually try to get about 1/8" toe in.
good luck

Check your track bar mount as well to see if there's any movement there. You'll probably need someone to seesaw the steering wheel while you're looking under it, something should show movement.

Hows your steering box?

nich, if you want i have some good unit bearings i pulled off my ZJ trying to figure out a vibration (ended up being bad tires)

if you want them to swap in to rule out bearings let me know.

also, are you sure something wasn't 'hit' and bent an axle tube or something? thats pretty random for it to start wandering that bad........ specially if everythings tight.

Could be shocks, my work truck shocks were worn out.  I knew it too, just had to push the boss hard enough to get them changed out.  It would wander going down the highway.... moreso when it was windy.  New shocks fixed it.

Did you check the rear end? A loose TB in the back can do that, especially if its lifted and using a drop bracket and an extension bolted onto the diff. May look tight but can shift back an forth causing rear steer. Most people end up welding them on to eliminate any play.
