Title: Guage issues?

my XJ was on E the other day so i put 40 bucks in and according to my guage it only gave me a 1/2 tank is this normal? or is my guage out of whack? have just been confused because to drive from my house by heritage LRT to ogden and back apparently burns through a 1/4 tank of gas according to the guage

could be a bad ground  ;) or a corroded wire
