Title: Should I buy this TJ?
Post by: kloubek on January 20, 2010, 12:59:49 PM
Hi guys,

Brand new to this site.

I used to have a 98 TJ SE and loved it, but I swore that if I got a TJ again, it would have the 6 so I could actually get up to highway speeds.

I have an opportunity to buy a 2001 Sport with well under 200k on it.  The engine is bad, and needs to be replaced.   It is otherwise in great condition. He is willing to take $3500 for it.

Is this a decent deal?  How much would it cost me to put in a used 4.0?  I've looked in the marketplace here, and when they have been for sale, I've noticed engines going for $500-$800 or so.  I'm guessing labour shouldn't be THAT intensive on something like this...

Also, is the 4.0 Cherokee/Grand Cherokee engine EXACTLY the same?  (Same harness, motor mounts, etc)?  If I do replace the engine, I just want to ensure what my options are as far as pulling it from other donor vehicles.

A buddy of mine has a 2001 TJ with a rough rear prtion of the body. It has a 2" BL on it but other than that, it's stock. only 60,000'ish KM's on it with a clean title. You'de probably get it for under $3000. Would be great for the drve train and numerous spare parts. No top.
