I would like to first thank everyone of you and your guests that are participating in the first CJA Off-Road 101 Course. We are hoping to have a fun and educational day for all.
The Course will be held within the McLean Creek Off Road Recreation Area on Saturday June 12th and Sunday June 13th 2010. We will be meeting at 8:30am at the McLean Creek store for check in. At 9am we will travel to the gravel pit as a group where we will hold the learning sessions. A Map to the Mclean Creek store is found on the CJA web site here.
We will break for lunch at approx 11:30am. Please bring yourself and guests a picnic lunch and lots of water. There will be no time or facilities for cooking.
At approximately 12:30 we will embark on a trail run on a pre-selected trail. You will have to use your newly learned skills over the course of the run and may possibly push your comfort levels a bit. We do however guarantee that all the obstacles are passable and should you feel really uncomfortable there is a bypass around most of them.
The 101 course will end with the completion of the selected trail. At this point you will have the opportunity to head home or if time permits there may be another run on a more challenging trail. If such run does occur, the trail leader will determine what the requirements are for the run at that point.
I am at this time going to warn you that there are serious risks that are taken when off-roading, we are going to try to teach you the safest procedures to ensure that every one is as safe as possible. Damage to your vehicle is also a strong possibility “trail rash” is a very likely to occur.
All non member participants will have to read and sing the CJA liability waiver. All participants under the age of 18 will have to have a legal guardian sign for them. For participants that have children under the age of 5 we strongly suggest that they are not brought to this event. Also we'd like to request that pets are left at home for this day too.
For more info on this subject please do not hesitate to PM me and I will answer or have an individual contact you to answer your questions.
In conclusion I have a few reminders:
- a donation to the CJA Trail fund will be asked as an entry fee.
- Drugs and alcohol is strictly prohibited. You will be asked to leave and possibly the police will be contacted.
- The owner of the vehicle must be present, either as a driver or rider.
- Proof of ownership, insurance and a valid driver's license for the driver is required and will be asked for.
- Please notify someone that you are attending the event, and bring the info for an emergency contact. It will be required and asked for.
- Extra clothing is strongly suggested. One full change is a good idea; you could get very wet during the day.
- The Course will be a go rain or shine.
Thank you for participating

Interested in the coarse, any spots left? The only thing I don't have is front tow hooks, I generaly just wrap a strap around my bumper if need be
-
tow points are mandatory for this event. vehicles without proper towhooks will not be allowed to participate. there will be no exceptions; if you sign up, please put proper towpoints on the front of the jeep so we can all have fun, and avoid turning anyone away.
without proper tow points, an easy, fun trail ride can turn into a pain-in-the-butt situation really quick.
if you have a wrangler this is the easiest modification to make. unibody cherokees will require the proper factory, or aftermarket bracket kits.
good luck and hope to see your jeep properly equipped at the 101!

Usually these are cheap and would be the proper way to pull you out of a sticky situation....
Usually we require front and rear tow points but we are a bit lax on that week-end...front is a must though.
see you there
-
Hey I'm going! I can't wait!! ;D ;D

It was a great time - thanks for all the hard work and patience everyone put into it. Climbing the steps to top of the world was, for me anyway, intense!!!! What a great learning experience!! Each time I go out with CJA folks, I learn a bout more about my rig and it's capabilities, myself and off-roading technique in general.
Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

Hey Guys!!
Awesome time!! It was nice to really find out that the Rubicon Decal on my hood isn't just a $4000 sticker!!
I have a couple of videos from the "Crack" that we tackled.

I had a lot of fun too...Just learning what my jeep can do really made me confident.
And it also helps that the instructors are AWESOME.
So thanks to all the instructors who had the confidence in me to do those harder parts of the trail......And the crack, well I wont be saying NO to crack anymore! Thanks Special K and Boss for letting me LOL
Thanks again, and I hope to wheel with you again in the near future.

Wanted to thank you guys, as well. I had a great time and you guys were really awesome as instructors!
Sadly though, while I made it to the other side, the trail wasn't for a stock KK. After I got it home and took it to the car wash to clean it with the pressure wand for a couple hours, I found quite a bit of more damage than we first saw. Mechanically, I busted a front fender flare (it ripped right out of the mounting points from the lining in the wheel well holding it on), and (much less of a big deal) I got a screw in one of the tires. Cosmetically, there's not a single panel that doesn't have scratching now. And the corners of all four fender flares got a chunk taken out of them from coming down on rocks. Most of the scratches can be buffed so I'm not crying too bad, but the front fender flare does has to be replaced.
To add insult to injury, while at the car wash, the pressure wand was so powerful, it quite literally burned a 3" x 3" square of paint right off my front bumper down the bare plastic. Couldn't believe it -- especially considering that Jeep paint is some of the toughest I've seen of the cars I've owned! That, combined with the scratches I got from coming down on a stump too hard means I'm probably going to just replace it and get a winch bumper. Any recommendations?
Wanted to tell my story because I think you guys should have a wheel size requirement for the trail we went on Sunday so other new KK owners don't run into the same problems. The trail was definitely not designed for 17" wheels and 8" of ground clearance.
I'll be back off-roading once I've got my 4" lift kit and some 35"s, but I think I've had all of my off-roading fun for a while. :P

I wish I went on the 101 this year. I hear nothing but good things about the event. On a side note though- you may want to reconsider putting 35" tall rubber on a Liberty. 31's will fit on a 4" lift but 35's will definately require some major/custom work and a ton of money. I'm also not impressed with Dodge paint jobs over the years. Remember when Caravans, neons, and some Jeeps just peeled or faded for no reason?

Sorry, yeah, would either be installing 31" or 33" at some point. As for the paint, it's a heck of a lot better than that on a BMW. BMW's paint is much nicer from an aesthetic perspective, but you can scratch it with your fingernail or just leaning against it with a pair of jeans. Jeep paint seems to be able to take a branch scraping against it without going too deep (shallow enough to buff out).
P.S. Can't find any winch bumper for the KK. Looks like one doesn't currently exist! Anyone know of one?
-
Good day
I have to make a clarification. During the Off Road 101 I stated that if a schakle has its load rating stamped in it, it should not be used. It was brought to my attention that Warn has their info indented in the schaklel. This is not stamped. The indentation is made during the casting of it.
If stamped, it will have very sharp edges. If cast the edges of the letters will be smooth. Have a look at it and use your own judgment.
Sorry about the confusion

Sounds like it is going to be a custom one, Logan... one of a kind... ya-yeah!! And make sure it is a high clearance one. :D

Seriously - a huge thanks to everyone at the 101 yesterday! Ben(AKA Rabbit) and I had a blast and had the ol' flowerpot in some pretty crazy places I wasnt sure she'd make it out of but in the end it all worked out all right... She showed up at the door just after midnight on the back a flatbad! Funny thing though.. the flatbed didnt make it out of my driveway.... seemed to have developed an oil leak! Sympathy pains I guess.....
Thanks again to everyone for everything and we'll see you out wheeling in a couple weeks once we get things put back together! I think I might still try to get a new oil filter on warranty... cant believe they sold me one with a big hole like that in it..... ;)
-

wasn't for no reason. all cars peeled for a while when the rules changed. lead free paint, high corrosion resistant metals, water based paint and crappy clear coat all played a part. may still play a part. i would take the liberty to the dealer and ask them to fix it.
back to the topic.

LOL too funny, I wonder if they will go for that? It was nice to see another woman there too! We need more women jeepers ;D
Cheers!

yes. yes we do.

Glad to here the "ol' flowerpot" made it home... ;D hopefully it won't be too bad getting it fixed and out on the trail again.
Thanks to everyone who made it out for the 101 on saturday and sunday. I had a blast both days and would enjoy beeing out on the trail with everyone who was out there again. Aaron and the guys did a great job organizing and running the 101. Thanks to Kyle too for staying back with me and getting the flowerpot back to the store.
Hope everyone had a blast and i hope to see you all around on the trails/meetings again.
Eric
-
Actually, just a big ol' thanks to Kyle for coming back and volunteering on Sunday, even though he started off being in the passenger's seat on Saturday.
And thanks to Eric and Kyle for bringing Timmy's to us campers.... sooooooooo appreciated!!

Yes it was Yes it was.

Wish I could've gone this year, but there was no money in the bank for potential repairs.
And considering the story from LibertyHopeful - and that I have a 2008 KK - there WOULD have been repairs. Glad to see another KK out there though. For what it's worth, I took mine out to Margaret Lake in Waiparous last year, and it made it up there with no problems at all.
LibertyHopeful - check out: http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/ There's a forum there specifically for KKs - Man there are some bad-arse liberty's on that site. Give you some ideas at least. I think 33 is currently the LARGEST tire on ANY KK, and it required extensive cutting/trimming. Another KK with 33's built himself a custom front and rear bumper

Awesome way to spend a sunny hot Sunday afternoon!
The CJC course was professionally conducted and very well organized; thanks to all the club members! Wasn't sure if my old YJ would make it, but it did hang together. My son and I learned many things about 4 wheeling we never thot of before. It was our 1st time at Mclean Creek and hope to return many times with the group.
Strongly recommend this course, too bad it isn't mandatory for all off roaders.
There were a few obstacles that we very changeling, luckily my old girl had a 3 inch lift and 31" MT tires (only wish I had disconnected the sway bar). Those with stock suspensions and street tires shud be cautioned about eminent damage when signing up. The CJC guys, looked the rigs over closely and made any concerns known to the drivers, from there you go at your own risk (and white knuckles).
Anyone looking to get in the sport shud invest in a CB, it would help keeping all together; will have to head down to the Walmart and check them out ...
Will have to throw a spare oil filter in the off road kit, along with a few other things that were mentioned.
Thanks guys/gals
Dwight
-
yes. yes we do.
X 2 ;)
-
Just want to add my thanks as well. The instruction was excellent, and I only had to be pulled out once. (Not bad since I hadn't been off roading like this in 20 years).
Anthony
-
hey MK's here, just signed up.. just like everyone else here... instructors did a great job, thanks for volunteering... it was an experience of a lifetime... you guys gave me so much confidence and showed me the hidden capabilities of my KJ. I'm don't think I'll purchase another vehicle without the JEEP logo because I am officially impressed!! Met lots of new trail rated friends and I"ll definitely be out trailing again. CJA is the best!!! Thanks again guys!
-
I think I managed to thank most of you before we finished up on Sunday, but again, thanks to all the instructors! I gotta agree with MK, I have way more confidence in my driving now. I had only owned the Rubi for a week before the course, and I'd just started learning what she could do, but you really helped me push my limits.
It was great to meet all the "students" as well, can't wait to see you on the trials again!
Also glad to hear that the "ol' flowerpot" made it home, and that you'll have her repaired soon.
Special thanks to Rubiclone for my new desktop background ;D I'd post it but it's against the rules :(
-
You need to become a member, because that is where you can post pics.

Working on that :)
I've got an open event done (assuming the 101 counts), I plan on going on the 26th, and I'm doing the meeting tonight.....when's the next trail cleanup / building a fence / bridge type thing?
Slowly but surely I'll get there.
-
I've managed to get some Pic's uploaded to facebook from Sunday's 101... please feel free to check em out! Let me know if you have any access problems.

Facebook? What is this Facebook? Sounds like one of them new fangled contraptions that all them young hippies are using.
