Title: knocking axle

i have a 94 yj that just started making noise when moving. sounds like a hub but when i put it in 4 wheel drive the sound quits. any ideas?

Have you checked the axle u-joints?

Mine did that for a bit and the culprit was a bad axle joint.

if its axle joints why would the noise quit when put in 4x4

Because when you are in 4wd there is load on the axle shafts ;)
