Title: Woodsmen - 90 MJ
Post by: Waytec on March 13, 2010, 11:06:14 PM
So here she be in all her diamond in the rough glory.  I picked this up from a friend that I am thinking is kicking himself for selling it to me, but it is in good hands.
It is my dally driver and parts getter.

The plans are to restore it, Yes restore. It is now 20 years old and according to my insurance company, it can put antique insurance on it if it passes their inspection, of which it won't.
Step one is going to be a new power plant. The old one has 400 000km's on it and not a single seal is not leaking and the compression is a little low. so instead of rebuilding it (big money) I am going to swap a 4.0L HO out of a 94 XJ into it.

This coming winter I want to do the body work and paint it.
I am right now thinking ether Gun Grey
(http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn279/waytec/MJ/camz2.jpg)
or Land Rover G4 Orange
(http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn279/waytec/MJ/2008_05110097.jpg)

Also the grill and light surrounds are painted white to mach everything ells right now, should I change them for all black of paint them the same as the rest or the truck.

I am looking for opinions on this one.

I like the orange, especially with the whole Trail Support theme...

I was thinking the same thing. swapping the grill for black to go with all the orange.
For body work I need to
change the hood - hail damage
change the front quarter panels - bush beat
repair the hail damage to the cab roof.
straiten the back. it look like something heavy was slid in th box and it went through the bulk head and pushed the back of the cab forward.

The box need patching in several places or if I can find one for the right price an new box.

 Deer (sp) Mr. Waytec

If you paint your rig orange. yes Pylon orange. How many people do you think will play tag with your rig. I for one will likely be inclined to do one hell of a long distance tag slap to the drivers door. ...... If lost; just aim for the orange. And, gun it.

Go with the Grey and get back to building it.. Really. Pylon orange....

You can rest easy knowing that there are many Orange painted vehicles not far from me. And, I am talking about over the bridge in Que. If you do paint it orange. I will go to Hull and buy you one of them's purple dash lights all of the French Kids over there seem to have. I think they sell them at the dollar store at the cottage.

Gun metal grey my boy.

Ps. Consider a 5.0 under the hood for effect. Love that sound.

cheers

I am still collecting parts for the build code name" Woodsmen". now I am taking a different rout with it.

I snagged a 88 MJ with almost no rust and no body damage but with a blown 2.5 of witch don't care about. I also picked up a 89 XJ with a 4.0 and auto for parts. Once My XJ is out of the garage the MJ and XJ will be moving in for the start of a long term build. I am going to do it right the first time and have it pretty. I don't plane on it seeing the harder trails ever.

As for now for my DD I moved the topper from the 88 Mj to my 90 DD
(http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn279/waytec/MJ/Nov82010002.jpg)

I pick up from Ron a MJ front bush guard. I did some research and found that they were only available for the MJs and not to many where sold due to they where twice the cost of a XJ one, there fore Most ordered the XJ one.
When I pulled the bumper off to put the tow hook/bush guard brackets on I found that the bumper brackets and supports where all bent so straitening was required.

I have always had a radial from the front end and found that the vacuum canister has broken free of the mount on the bumper. I zip-tied it up in place. the splash guard was always falling down and I put it back up at least a dozen times so off it came.
I also trimmed the flares to match the body lines sine the plastic that goes along the bottom of the bumper is now gone as well.

all mounted with front hooks and guard

I don't have pics of it but I had a oil leak from the engine, I changed the valve cover gasket. Old one was just silicon and from NAPA I got a gasket for it. Not a fun job to change, everything does not want to stay in place, in order to put the cover back on. Also I changed the rotor, distributer, plugs and weirs. And gave it a oil change adding that Lucas engine additive, The odometer has over 400 000 on it now so I figured whey not give the snake oils a try. The only difference i have noticed so far after is the oil pressure is more stable not all over the place anymore.

Yup the tree of them are keeping me busy, got the DDMJ ready for winter, got the engine almost out on the XJ, have a new one for it and the Project MJ and parts donor XJ are both still in storage until the XJ is done.
and it is cold outside.

"trail support" ? What exactly does this entail?
You going to have something ready for trail projects? Carrying supplies, providing logistical support, etc...?

That the idea. not this one have a change of plans now due to getting a 88 MJ in better shape. The idea is to do trail work. I am involved in a project mapping and creating a trail system, that is in a aria that is not discussed in an open forum on the CJA  site. Its also going to be the camping, hunting fishing rig as well.

Trail support rig = rig that's used for supporting the trail run by bringing the cheeseburgers, chili, and bacon?  :)

well this projct has come to a end. I have sold the 88 MJ that was going to be it, and the 90 MJ I am driving right now ( the wight one) will probably be replaced this coming summer and it will go up on the block as well.
Not enough time or money and I  want a CJ7 more.

So long story short it came back, and my misses said keep it and fix it up. I LOVE HER SO MUCH. (http://www.runemasterstudios.com/graemlins/images/kissing.gif)

This is going to be a build thread of rebuilding the truck and then Overlanding build it. In the end hopefully I will be able to park it beside Mario's of AT and not have his lift its rear wheel to it.

The truck came with a serca 1990 aftermarket tape deck.  I have drove it for the last 2 years with it but finally had enough when the display went. So out with the old in with the new. i just got a cheep one for now and when I upgrade the hole sound system I will add something fencer.

the old bumper has had better days and the guys over at Comanche Club are saying that I will have better luck finding a pot of gold then a mint bumper in Canada. so it will get something custom built here shortly.

Off it came
(http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn279/waytec/MJ/July172011010.jpg)

I removed the box and traded the frame to POR 15.

I got my parts truck home and dismantled. the new front panels are on this truck.

I had an issue with the inner fenders pulled off the week arse nuts that are all rusted up. after some thinking the light build went off and this is what I came up with.

They are just push on with some teeth that hold them in place I can cut them off needed later.

well I have been having trouble with my hood release. The cable is seizing up. I have lubed and freed it up a couple times so instead of changing or fighting with it agene I went with a $15 option.

I got the new box off the parts truck and on to this one. I treated the underside to POR 15 and the top of the fuel tank because it was covered in surface rust and allot of road dirt sits up there.

next order of business was a new rear bumper and it is hit proof, bomb proof, and zombie proof.

I dont have a plasma cuter and nor the greatest at welding I called up a buddy Dana that has mad skills. Dana working on it.

To make it zombie proof we put lots of support.

To get around the shape of the frame, we cut up the old stock mounts and used them as spacers to get the right spacing. the mounts started as 6" 3/16 flat bar and it then was cut into shape buy keep cutting until it fit. I used a piece of 5x2 3/16wall

More POR 15. this stuff lays down so nice it look like the bumper was powder coated.

the only issue is my dumb arse didn't measure right and took some numbers from  the sites saying the bumper is to be 60 inches long. outside edge to outside edge of the MJ is about 64 to 66 inches. so it is a little on the inside of the sheet medal but I am ok with this because I can do some pipe bending later make something if I want to.

All mounted up.
