hey i have a couple questions about upgrading my engine i have a 99 tj with a inline 4 2.5 lt.
i was first wondring what would be a good upgrade since im doing it should i jsut go big or go home?
second was thinking of just putting the inline six 4.0 lt in will it be a good swap and is it a direct bolt it?
finally money isnt a huge deal but still interested in extra costs i will run into with whatever upgrade.
Thanks

from what ive seen in a few magazines the 4.0L does not bolt into the 4 cyl. space. new mounts and such will need to be made. so, it may be easier to find a 4.0L TJ or if the swap is what you want then maybe look at the costs of a V8. preferably a full drivetrain swap from a truck of other suv. it may come down to whos doing the swap, if you're paying soemone then it wont be cheap anyway you do it.

I believe jpthing has done this swap in a tj, so he may have some ideas for you

you're kidding right? you need more then belt dressing to swap an engine...

He may have some good tips
you could take what you want from it but it could help
I usually ask for help from others and combine what I hear and do what I want my way
even mistakes made will give things not to do

I did the swap in my YJ it is not a direct bolt in. As Eric mentioned you need to cut off the frame side motor mounts and weld new ones in. Plus you need to figure out the underhood electrical. I used a XJ as a donor and the bulkhead connectors were different between my YJ and the XJ so it was easier to wire in the extra cylinders. Finally, you need to modify your driveshafts.
