Hi all, new to the Jeep world and this forum, I'm an old fart kids are gone and I no longer need to think of having a vehicle for anyone but myself ;D so it's Jeep time and I will keep my old truck
Here is my question to the some of you Guru's, I have an opportunity to by a 2010 sport with 12,000km or an 06 Rubicon with 45,000KM. I am definetly leaning towards the rubicon. Disregarding price what would you desire, is the in line 6 better than the mini van engine in the new Jeeps, what else should I be looking for to make my decision
Thanks
David from the Elk Valley

Hi David, and welcome!
I'm no guru but here's my 2 cents. Rubicon? Yes - it's worth it. As for engines, there has been lots of talk about the minivan engines as of late. I'm partial to my inline 6 in my o4 rubi...

I also like the In line 6, time tested. Hope to see you out to a meeting soon to get to know the group.

The inline would my choice for the proven durability. An 06 rubicon is a very nice litt package to start with.
I wouldnt even hesitate to take the 06 in favor of the 2010 non rubicon.
-
06 rubicon. you may never have to modify it to have incredible fun. depending on your personality really.
* winch and accessories not included :)
-
I own an '08 Rubicon...and I'd probably buy the '06 Rubicon instead of the 2010 Sport.
You can go more places in stock TJ Rubi than in a stock JK that's not a Rubi.
There are some nice features on the JK, like a three piece hard top and nice creature comforts...but if you're going to wheel it I'd go with the '06 for sure.
There are folks on here that have done a lot of years wheeling almost-stock or moderatly modified TJ Rubicons and they seem pretty happy with their rigs.

Thanks for all the replies, is there anything in particular I should check on the 06 Rubi

Get underneath and check the skid plate and diffs for any scratches or repainting. If it is not scratched, than it has not been wheeled, this is great!
If scratched repainted, dented, than it has been wheeled. Not a deal breaker but good to know.

Well that about answers that. Now the only thing I worry about is losing a bit of seat time on my 990 :'( hopefully the Jeep isn't to much fun, first post after I buy it if I do will be another What Mods NOW ;D

this may sound dumb, and you can shoot me down for saying it, but if you're old enough that the kids are gone, then you may be old enough to find it very annoying to get in and out of a TJ. the JK is much easier to get into. that said, i would still get the Rubi TJ abd buy a step ladder ;D

Listen here sonny, I can still out sled and out ride most young whipper snappers, wasn't too many years ago I ran a full marathon and competed in several triathlons. So at our first jeep meet look up (way up)from where you will be, look for a grey haired guy (think Einstein hair) trying desperately to get out off his rubi to flip you the bird from the top of the hill ;D
LOL I think I am going to like this forum, once I tune up a few young smart alecs ;)

I can't answer that, but I bet someone around here can. Another option is some type of sliders/steps.

i think he just called me a whipper snapper... i would have prefered "age challenged".

i fit a few sets to the big trucks out there, not so great for the trail jeep though, they arent cheap and i doubt you'll want to bounce them off a stump. more for the rig rockets.
welcome to the forum OldDogg ;D
you will find many good jeep folk around here with endless amounts of info. you may find some with similar none-jeep outdoor interests as well. :)

Well I know some of you hard core wheeelers are going to be disappointed :'( but I re assessed what the Jeep would be used for and I figure maybe 2 to 5% will be what some may consider extreme duty the rest of the time will be hunting, fishing some 4 wheelin for play so I decided on the 2010 with 12,000km. The final price was less than the 06 rubicon and it came with a 5 year 100000km extended warranty the previous owner had purchased. After driving it for a day I do think the old engine was better suited for the 2 door Jeeps, though it been a few years since I used one. First thing I need to do is put some decent tires on it and a receiver for a small trailer to haul the bikes around.
Any tire suggestions?
Thanks for everybody's input, pictures later today

I'd recommend a good AT tire if you're not going off-roading much besides hunting and fishing. You'll probably not be happy with MT's in the winter for daily driving duties. I've run Bridgestone Dueler AT REVO's on our jeep and they do pretty good, I think they held the road (ice and such) better that the BFG AT's. We run Yokohama A/T-S on some of our work trucks and they do well. To put it in perspective the Yokohama's was all the coal mines I go to use on their fleet.
I don't think you can go wrong with any of them. tirerack.com has reviews for most manufacturers which may help you decide.

i had goodyear wrangler territories on my previous jeep.. best tire ive had.. wasn't crazy aggressive but dig like crazy and were amazing in the snow. tons of grip.. i could hit the 318 pretty good and not break traction in the winter. my $.02

I have the Duellers on my truck, it is a good tire but i definitely want something more aggressive than that. I didn't mean I would not be going off road much I just meant I wouldn't be doing the "metal masher" down in Moab to often ;D
Edit to add: I will probably park the Jeep come November and just drive my pickup in the winter so snow isn't a concern as far as tires go

it does exist

I've had some good luck with General Grabber At2's. Near identical tread to the BFG a/t, but heavily siped and has sidewall tread.

That's a purty Jeep. What part of the Elk Valley are you in? There's a retired dentist from California that lives in Fernie who is a NAXJA trail leader that can help you with Jeep related questions as well. Elkford has a shop that deals in offroad only vehicles, and the owner has insight on some good trails in the area if you don't mind some mud.
-
Thanks for the info, I do know the owner in Elkford didn't know about the Fernie guy, I have lived in the Kootenays all my life so I sort of know the lay of the land around here. I am a firm believer in good land stewardship, in other words using our 4*4's dirt bikes etc. in places they belong. And thanks for the compliment on a purty Jeep I hope it stays that way for at least a little while :)

Jeeps get purtier with time... Rocky mountain striping give them character. ;D
Nice Jeep Devildogg!... hope to see you on the trail sometime.

It was hard to turn up the free 5 year bumper to bumper the previous owner bought, and it's only got 12,000K . It will be getting dirty this coming weekend we'll see what it can do 8)
