Title: connecting plastic
Post by: dunl on April 05, 2010, 12:10:02 PM
Is there any safe and waterproof way to connect two pieces of plastic pipe that don't quite fit together?  I picked up some parts for a homemade snorkel, and instead of the 2" ABS I picked up some Rigid vacuum extension tube....it's either just a little bit bigger, or just a little bit smaller, so that it doesn't connect with a snug fit.

Anyway to sleeve these somehow in order to make things fit?

Plastic is going to be difficult to make the seal.  Enough glue may seal it but it may not last.  My experience with vacuum tube is that it gets brittle.  I'm not sure if it is plastic or ABS either.  The glue you are using may not stick well to one of the pipes or fittings.  Stick with the ABS pipe.

I'd be tempted to try marine epoxy.

Dow Corning 732 multipurpose sealant.  We get the stuff in kits from our of our suppliers.  Works awesome.

That might not look as nice, but it certainly sounds less stupid than paying for this:

Went through the same exercise and agree totally with your conclusion. What you making is called a "plumbers snorkel".  I used tape and silicon, looks pretty ghetto but works great.

great Ron, now you have a plumber's snorkle to go with your plumber's crack.  the PC spoon will be a gooder.

Al, you are spending way to much time on the internet, you have taken my perfectly solid advice and turned it into something demoral.  Now would you go work on my can of Zinc please.
