Title: Lifting the hood for cooling
Post by: Waytec on April 07, 2010, 11:38:16 AM: So the summer is coming and I need to do something about the 4.0 in my XJ getting hot.

I was thinking about cutting and putting Run Cool vents in, but I have seen guys putting spacers on the hood hinges and lifting it. How well does this work? And how thick of spacers are you using?

I am liking this idea because I can lower it back down for the winter.

Just in the summer the hood and panels get so hot you cannot touch them. Once you open the hood you can feel the heat trapped in the engine compartment and it is a little excusive.

Overheated a little towing the trailer back to Calgary a month ago.
Just going to put in a better thermostat and replace the fluids and see what happens.
If it still is overheating I will just cut the hood open.
Then get a cored truck radiator from the junk yard.

Buy a spare hood from one of the several Cherokees floating around or being parted out. Cut out a cowl, and weld it to the main hood. You can make it as wide as you like. No need for vents, and no issues with rain or water coming through.

Post by: Vinman on April 07, 2010, 05:21:26 PM: I've heard of XJ guys removing the weather seal from the trailing edge of the hood to allow the hot air to escape.
One minute job and reversible if you don't like it.

Post by: cLAY on April 14, 2010, 10:11:05 PM: When I was in Moab I ran with out the hood and it definatly made a difference. Tried water wetter twice, both times on tow rigs. and never saw a difference.
