Title: Residential electrical code question, Rookie?
Post by: Vinman on April 08, 2010, 05:35:40 PM
We are in the process of having a house built and I have a question regarding light switch placement.

When entering a room (laundry/mudroom) , how close to the door does the light switch have to be? I'm sure theres a minimum distance.

Thanks
Vince

Light or light switch?

I have rooms (kitchen) where the switch is half-way across the room in a "corridor" to the bathroom... absolutely asinine placement, though there is some light from the other fixtures on your way there unless you are coming IN the back patio doors.

oops, that should be light switch.

You can not but your hand in the sink and turn the light switch on, even if gfci protected. No sink? Power box can be fairly close to sink  if has a gfi.
No minimum or maximum from door, common sense applies ,IE not behind the door or have to trim down cover plate cause it is to close to the door or wall angle.

Hmm.. bathroom light switches are close enough to reach sink and switch... and outlets.  Kitchen may be different.  Heck, with the houses today, you'd have to put the bathroom switches outside the bathroom to not be able to reach them!  ;D

If there is a shower or tub you do have to put them outside.... 3 feet from said shower or tub.
