Title: Engine Light

So the engine light came on in the 2001 TJ today. The code on the odometer when, you hit the key three times is P1486. The website info I pulled indicated that the code is for “Pinched or blocked hose in the evaporative hose system”. The dealership said that is the vent system for the fuel tank. They would like to have the vehicle in for a diagnostic and do a “smoke test” to find the problem. The work would not be covered under warranty and I would hate to pay them a tone of cash to tell me they changed the gas cap or something simple. The tech on the phone said it should not cause any problems running it for awhile with error code on.  

Has anyone had similar problem before I try to find the source?

Had the gas cap one before, and have removed the tank a few times.

Clean up underneath and check all your hoses.

Is 01 evap still under the hood, or did it move to the rear quarter by then?

Whichever it is, find it, trace all the hoses. If you dont find anything, try a reset to see if it goes away.

I noticed the gas cap was not on strait. So I reset the computer by disconnecting the battery and the code cleared. No recurrences in the last 24hrs so it must have been just the gas cap. That was a cheaper fix than taking it to the dealership.
