Title: tj sending unit issues
Post by: fraserr7 on May 31, 2010, 06:19:33 PM
does anyone with a 1997 tj wrangler se, with oil pressure sending unit problems? I've had to replace it before due to a blown o ring in the pressure unit it self, at first the gauge in the vehicle worked properly, now it jumps all over the place, and sometimes tells me its at zero and I get a nice check gauges light along with it. Just trying to find out if these sending units are a common flaw, or if I have bigger issues... Thanks!

depends on what I am doing.   on road or highway never goes below the first tick.  usually above half way mark when driving.

unless i use a fram oil filter.  then its always below half and sometimes goes down as I accelerate.  even seen it at first tick while driving down deerfoot.  also at this time, if i am wheeling and almost stall it, the check engine light may come on as its usually hot enough to idle at first tick.

wix oil filter all is good.  never goes below 1 tick so no check engine lights wheeling or otherwise.   check napa and you can order a oil pressure tester for $70 or so if you are really concerned.  think a shop would charge the same to test for you.

Option #1) Check the wires for breaks, or spots where the wire are worn through as if it grounds out or loses connection it wont give an accurate reading
Option #2) Make jumper lead that will connect to another jeep motor and tap into that sensors harness, compare the readings and see whats at fault from there.
Option #3) Run a good quality aftermarket like an autometer guage and see how they compare or simply skid the stock one.

Fiends, with the fram oil filter in your jeep, it sounds a lot like what mine does, and I run a fram oil filter haha... Ill start by changing that and see what happens. Thanks guys!

i thought it was just weird but the second time all the store had was fram so i got it and it did the same thing as before.  so not a coincidence.  i almost ordered the oil pressure tester, but at the time all my money was going to the bank of billy.  good luck.
