-
It's classified as a " city" the last time I checked Jeff. Not a good one either( Hps4ever is from there. Explains a lot)
What area did you have in mind in August?
Do you want to wheel and camp as well?
-
Hmmm thinking maybe hanging out in my canary yellow Speedo ? Kidding...im in...and promise not to hurt anyones feelings..lol
-
it can simple as just gettting out for a few hours or a day even a nnight
either way im just twitching to get out in the jeep
i havent fun anything at maclean this year .. and i dont know if i want to start on a long weekend .
and well waiperous seems to be to mild for everyone
anyone got any ideas .. i dont even have to lead i just want to go out wheeling
-
I'm in too... and I'm up for camping too!!
-
I'd be in for a day ride Sat, Sun, Mon, or Tues. What's everyone thinking?
-
Might be canceling my plans so I can get some work done on the Jeep. So I may be up for a day trip or two.....possibly a night or two of camping as well...depends on how much work I can get done on the Jeep beforehand ;)
-
I can try to bust free for a day run or two.
-
Yes Don! Gotta try out that new Winch! You can pull my winchless behind out when I get stuck. I will be in as long as my wife and I don't decide to go to Kelowna that weekend (chances are low for kelowna)
-
Im sure i can find room or you in the trailer should need be...lol....
Oh snap, Stacy - you've just be propositioned! Just send Rick into the trailer instead. He's like a cuddly little bear ??? hehehe
-
sounds like alot of people want to get out . thats good ..
-
Kev... Rick is hairy enough... not sure I could handle apeman, lol.
-
hey...i didnt post that! lol..or the comment about my yellow speedo either! but im sure we can find time to head out should a good spot be agreed upon!
-
Hi,
I'm new. I just traded in my sahara for a rubicon and would love to get out for a day trip. I don't know anyone in the Calgary area that shares my interest in offroading or jeeps, so I figured I'd give this a try. If anyone's headed out this weekend or next I'd love to tag along?
-
ok well lets make it next saturday at the store in mclean for 8am
for those who dont know where the store is then just go to the shell in brag creek and youll see other jeeps driving by .. probably just follow them and theyll lead you to the store
and i guess we can figure out a trail to hit when were all together
-
I'm in. See everyone there.
-
Oh yeah, just forgot that I am working Friday night until 8am, so I may not be able to get there until just before 9 am. I don't know the area that well but could probably find people on the trails.
-
we dont usaully get rolling till 9 anyways . just cuz its nice to just catch up a bit
so for those who are coming
bring food for the day
make sure your dressed for wheeling and we do live in alberta so good chance itll snow
good tires no bald tires and everyone needs there own spare
recouvery gear is a must
plenty of windshield washer fluid
full tank of gas
and we should be able to make a nice day out of this
-
excellent. I will meet everyone at the store ;D
-
Don't forget tow points!
On that note though, I don't have any recovery gear yet. I was checking out the recovery straps at Princess Auto the other day. Is the 3" good?
Max. vehicle weight: 13,500 lb
Breaking strength: 27,000 lb
If not, I'm sure the 4" would be fine:
Max. vehicle weight: 17,500 lb
Breaking strength: 35,000 lb
....and is there anything else I need, or should I be fine to borrow the other stuff?
I'll see if I can pick up some thick gloves as well....are "welders gloves" okay? I think on the 101 they said any thick leather gloves. That was more for winching though.

Kev!! Stop being an engineer!! ;-p
I have a 3" for my fat a** unlimited and it has worked just fine (been yanked out a couple of times, like every run).
A good pair of leather work gloves should be fine, something that will stop your hands from being cut to ribbons from a winch rope (or to fend of an attack from a particularly vicious squirrel).
Shouldn't cost you more that $75 for everything at Princess Auto.
-
Modern Motors actually carries a pretty good assortment of basic recovery goodies at reasonable prices, or you can order from Northridge if you like shiny stuff ;)
What you need:
1 or 2 3/4" shackles
1 tow strap, no metal hooks on it - you want soft loops at both ends. 20 feet is fine, 30 feet is better (4 inch is overkill)
1 pair of good quality leather gloves. Welder's gloves are probably overkill - work gloves will be just fine.
1 bag to put it all in
What you will NEED if you have a winch:
1 tree saver
1 more 3/4'' shackle
What you will want as soon as you figure out how useful they are if you have a winch
1 snatch block
1 dirty old (heavy) blanket to use as a winch line weight
-
3 inch will be more then fine ..
and yes tow points front and rear very important ..
the funny thing about leather gloves this can be looked at in different ways
my winch is to slow to very need gloves and if you have one of those m8274 winches i think i would rather have no glove on so if there is a fray it just cuts me instead of catching the glove and pulling my hand in
but thats just because i worked on the rigs and have seen lots of accidents caused by so called PPE
-
One thing to consider and I do it all the time. Don't even run your winch unless the person spooling the cable on is at least 5', minimum 3' back from the front of the vehicle and I can see their hands. When I loose sight of their hands I simply quit winching. Leather gloves are over rated sometimes. Don't let the cable or rope slide through your hands, but walk the cable along gripping down gently each step so you can feel a burr before you clap down on it. Works for me anyway. ;)
-
Or just run synthetic line ;)
-
I'm in. See you on Saturday.
-
oh and hopefully most of us have CBs always a good thing to have ..
-
plenty of windshield washer fluid
Is this going to be a mostly mud bog type day?
-
considering how much it has rained.... bet on it Serge.
-
the mud is going to be there .. its your choice to drive around it or through it
ill be doing my best to stay somewhere clean but we all know that can change fast
-
ok well this is bad news for all of you
i am heading out of town for work on friday , i willl not be able to lead you guys out
but i hope you all have a safe and fun saturday . enjoy . and hopefully someone else shows up that knows the trails and can make sure you have a great day
-
That's a bummer. Anyone else know the trails? I'm not that familiar with the area yet. . .
-
If there is a group of you, get a map(s) and go exploring. Stay on the 4x4 trails, have basic recovery gear to pull each other out when needed and you should be good to go.
Trail maps are available online and at the store. There may even be some at some of the trail kisoks.
Don't be afraid to explore the trails. That's part of the fun :)
-

can't resist ;) but if you can't find the trails, how are you going to find people on the trails?????? :P ::) :o 8) 8) ;)
if you go exploring, be careful. get out and check holes, pick lines, etc. nobody wants to see (well i'd be cool) let me rephrase, nobody wants to pull a dead jeep out of a bomb hole they didn't bother to check before driving in. its also not a problem to turn around on a trail if its too tough. been there; done that.
that being said, stay on trails on the maps, and have fun!
-
ooooohhhhhhh snap! Guess I set myself up for that one. Didn't say I couldn't find the trails, just don't know all of them that well and thought someone may have an inside track on a less busy one for the long weekend :). If I missed the group in the parking lot, I was planning on asking one of the many long-weekenders out there if there was a train of jeeps going around to help me find the group. Part of the misery of having to work right up to the ride I guess.
-
I'd like to go check on an abandoned vehicle, get the VIN and scope out a turnaround spot for a car hauler trailer...
Won't take too long, then hit up a nearby trail?

-

Good ride today. If someone knows the contact info for the guy in the green sahara unlimited JK who was there, can they pass it along to me? We were going to touch base at the end of the day about a bumper/winch combo but didn't end up chatting about it. Thanks
