I am experiencing a clunking noise, maybe from the tansmission or engine area when I slow down and I am in either second or first gear. I seems to be only when I am slowing down and not at high speed in higher gears. Has anyone experienced this before of any ideas what it may be? Thanks

Is the noise at wheel speed or faster at drive shaft speed...?
I think it's a u-joint somewhere in your drive train...

I would be inclined to agree with Dom...

Does it clunk only at low gears, or does it clunk when moving between gears at low speeds?
x3 on the u-joint

The more I hear it, the more I think it sounds more like a low speed vibration sound like something is loose and vibrates at low speed/higher revs????
-
How many km on your beast? Does it do it in 4wd or just 2wd?
-
my jeep has 250,000 but it only seems to do it in 2wd and at lowers speeds, it almost sounds like something is loose!! Anyone anyadvice or suggestions?

It's hard to diagnose a vehicular malady online. The most people can do for you is throw out suggestions.
I'm leaning towards a driveshaft u-joint as I've had the same problems as you in the past(common Jeep problem)
Your best bet is to have a friend who is mechanically inclined have a look at your Jeep or take it to a shop.

are driveshaft u-joint gnerally expensive to replace???
