Title: wiring problem in my cj

Jeep was running fine before I went on vacation.  I got back and it was dead (not surprised ).  There were a few problems.  Starter was hanging up, and fried the solenoid.  I changed the selenoid, and the starter.  While I was at it, I swapped in a GM alternator.  Now I cannot shut the motor off.  I turn the key and all it does is shut the tach off.  It also runs like crap.  I thing the distributer is not getting enough power.  I checked the output of the alternator, around 14 v.  I hooked everything up the way it was, not sure what I missed.

Sounds like you may have some ignition wires reversed.

Does your cj coil have a ballist resistor?

Are you sure you got the right kind of alternator? Some are internally regulated, and some use an external voltage regulator.

If you jeep was dead, have you bridged the battery ground with a meter or test light to check for a draw?

very common issue with the gm altinator swap. happened to me. a diode needs to be instaled. now i know the next thing your thinking is
"ok, great. where" well........... i dont remember. i will try and find out though.

I think I got it.  The alternator needs to turn more than 1500 rpm to start charging.  As well I found the button on the distributor was missing.  Not sure how it got lost, not even sure how it would run at all.  The key for the off position was just a bad relay.
