I fit 33X12.50's with no rubbing on my gf's 97 with a 2" spacer lift. Had 15X8 wheels with 3.75" backspace though.

if it one of the ones with smaller tires to start with, like a 205/75r15, the 30x9.5r15's will still rub a little without adjusting steering stops, not to mention the flex.

I tried at work a few weeks ago without luck. that was with the stock 15x7's steelies, with the right offset of wheels, a a little lift, 31's are easy

i wheeled with a guy that runs 33x12.50 Boggers on completely stock TJ. He removes the fender flares to wheel.
On road, it rubs at full turn if going over curb.

a 98 tj came with an assortment of rims, but if you are running 31x10.5's I would bet that you have the 15x8 "gamblers" on it.

conventional thinking is that is the largest size you can go, everything else being stock.  Like other posters say, trim/remove/change the flares and the wheel offset and you could run a larger tire.

I have 32x11.5's on a stock suspension, with bushwacker "flat urethane" flares and mickey thompson 15x10 classic II's.  No rubbing, and I could fit a 33x12.5 and maybe even a 33x13.5 on it...

I have a basically stock 97 TJ Sahara, and I have run 33x12.5x15's on it for the last couple years.
the only thing I put on it was a 2" budget boost (those urathene coil spacers) and washers in the steering stops.
(as the tires will run on the sway bar at full lock on the steering wheel.)
the rims I have are 15x8 Jeep "Gambler" rims.  (if you need a set, I happen to have an extra 5 rims laying around)

Enjoy !

I also have a stock '98 TJ with the 15" steelies, I recently purchased a used set of Gambler rims and am also looking to put new rubber on them without doing any mods/spacers or lift. anyone have any ideas as far as just a nice general tire size to put on them ie: 245-75-15?? Thanks for the posts.

31x10.5x15.

Best/biggest tire size you want to run on an otherwise stock tj running gamblers, IMHO
