I was thinking about doing it but i dont know how strong a brake cable would be unless there is some kind of thicker one for downhill racing? I also don't know where I can get one. What are your thoughts on this?

There won't be any load on the cable, it's just sliding the collar over. So, IMHO a bike brake cable should be plenty "strong" for the job. If you really want something stronger, a motorcycle clutch cable would also work great, but would be tough to get in the same length as a bike cable. I suppose it will depend on mounting location, your lift and required slack.

Napa has a locking PTO cable that would seem to work well;
I bought one, but I've been pretty hesitant to use it,
my problem is after you sheild the cable to prevent it from taking on water....how do you seal up the junction where the cable goes into the front diff?
Just seems to me that it would be a nice area for contaminants to get into the oil......

I was thinking a high temperature silicone of some kind, and make the tube fit very tight through the hole to keep out dirt.

You could cut a gasket for it, or use an O-ring, depending on the mounting surface. I just saw a tip in JP magazine on using spent bullet casings as gasket cookie cutters.
