upon my research everyone likes the swing out tire carrier better due to the weight of the tire. I will build my own but am wondering if anyone knows where i can get that spindle hinge and clasp. Id like to get the heavy duty one with bearings not just a small pipe spinning in a large pipe lol. Thanks for any insite. i have a aftermarket heavy duty bumper so i will weld the spindle to that. I have seen one on www.jeeptubes.com but would like to buy locally. There was a post long ago with an ebay link of exactly what i want also but its not there anymore :(. There is a few members here have built these so just like to know where you got the parts.cheers

I got most of the parts you need from UFA 's catalog(long time ago though), but I stumbled upon similar hinges at Princess Auto.

Gregg's Distributor's have some weld-on greasable hinges too that could work

Or you can do what I did buy some tubing ,a 9" grade 8 bolt, some tapered roller bearings and build your own hinge in double shear and never have to worry . It carries a 106 pound tire and rim combo plus 2 full 20 liter jerrycans with no issues in 3 years and its greasable too

just a thought but why do you need bearings on some thing that does not turn very often? the simple pipe within a pipe is a very strong and reliable joint that dirt and debris will not affect. dont reinvent the the wheel for a simple joint. drill and tap a hole on the outer pipe and insert a zerk fitting so that it can be greased and this joint will never fail. just make sure to clean the outside of the inner pipe and the inside of the outer, have a decent fit and forget about replacing bearings ever again. this will make a strong and very functional joint.
but hey thats just my two cents.

I used a trailer stub axle like Fredduck and it worked out fine.
However, just after I built mine I saw a design using two heim joints(one above the other) as the hinge. This allows to to fine tune the angle it sits at so it will always closr nicely. On mine I welded it on so that it would sit about 1/4" high on the non-hinge side without a tire on it so it would bang on the main part of the bumper when closed. After adding the bumper and jack the weight caused it to flex down and now it just barely scrapes the bumper when closing.
Using heims you can thread them in and out to get a perfect fit.

You need to be carefull when considering these spindles. There are a lot of cases of failed welds from guys using spindles on tire carriers.
Spindles are hardened steel, and are not easy to weld properly.
Just something to be aware of.

Very true Billy, mine was a stub shaft off a scraped piece of equipment.
The plate and the stub axle it was welded to were fabed at the factory.
The stub shaft was drilled through the plate and welded both side

ya sorry for posting here ( i was actually looking for my post in tech looking for an answer because i thought i put it there haha) Tons of great insite here guys/gals,im excited now. Looks like some of the designs you guys came up with will be pretty much what im after.Thanks again and look for the finished product in buildups.(not here) cheers.
