Title: Toy Run for 2010
Post by: tarzan on November 13, 2010, 12:04:36 AM
The Stampeders are not holding a Toy Run this year is there any interest in this club in holding or helping with one?

And the CJA is going to do something about it.  Give the exec a day or so to start coordinating.

I am most glad to hear CJA is willing to run or help that is great.  I have been emailing FWS to get info on how they put the runs together in the past and will forward any to CJA.  The CT4WDA has also expressed interest in running or helping with a Toy Run and the board members said they were going to contact CJA execs.  I really hope we can all pull together and save this event as the need this year is probably even greater with the economy the way it is.

Maybe we can put our resoursces together and plan a run for the 11th? Apparently this is going to the exec to handle, so i assume they will have something to put forth in the next few days, if not i will have everything put together no later than wednesday...looks like the 11th is the best date. Cmon, lets keep this alive for a great cause.

Wow. After organizing this event 6 out of the 7 years that the FWS held it, its good to see some enthusiasim about it all again.  ::)
We went from 8o rigs the first year to 110 the second year then progressivly drop down over the years. Last year, being a bit of a switch up on the idea to hopfully encourage more to come out again, but I think we were down to being able to count on one hand the people from each club that showed thier faces. Sad that we didn't organize one this year?.....actually even more sad that there was that lack of participation for the past few years.

We always tried to make it about the KIDS and leave all other differences aside. Hopefully it will continue in that fashion to some degree.

Its still sad that FWS is abandoning it. Its ok to be sad. And it is sad that participation for ONE Sunday to help others has dwindled over the years.
i have attended every toy run but one.

Actually  we didn't abandon it. I did however know full well that if we left it for even one year that some other club would jump right on it, because it was and still is an excellent way for the 4x4 community to give a little something back to the Calgary community or any other city for that matter.

I received a pm asking me about the Hospital and its reception to the 4x4 community. Somewhere down the grape vine of rumor trails it was thought that they didnt receive us well. I'll squash any thoughts of that coming from any of the recipients of the toys over the years. Over all the years of doing this there was never any suggestion of negativity in that aspect.

If anybody has heard other wise please feel free to contact me directly,  not via third and fourth ear so I can set things straight.

Gunther.

The city traffic people had to have information and insurance proof by mid Sept. They in turn need to notify the city police for an escort request. The first couple of years were much easier to set up. It got more complicated and potentially more expensive the last few years.
Unfortunately the city, for charity or not seemed to make sure they always got thier charges in.

I think that in order to get everyone on the same page, this is best left until the meeting on weds. Then we can figure out who is going to figure out what details, and some contacts from other clubs, etc etc...it may be a little late in the game but i think we can put something worthy together...and i cant see why we cant make this a sunday event again. Thanks for everyones enthusiasm, and willingness to participate.
I dont think it should have been left for Gunther and the FWS to take care of for so long, and would be good to get everyone more involved in this.
I know we have alot to get done in a short amount of time, but it may be feasable.
Thank you Gunther, and im sure we will be in touch.

Thanks for stepping up guys. I pm'd Tarzan some info on our website. I'f the exec is having a meeting on Wednesday it might be useful to have them draw up a letter that people who are asking for donations can show to the business. I got asked that a few times to prove I wasn't just some freeloader.

The only problem that we ever experienced wtih the Children's Hospital was one year there was a miscommunication as to when they toys were arriving. Thus our contact person was not there to receive the toys and security was rather confused about what to do with a whole truck load of toys.

Sounds like the Toy Run will be continuing.
Thanks to all that will make it happen. :)

As cool as the police escort was, and it was :D , Bowness park and the Hospital are so close to eachother, we don't need an escort ;)

That is great. i have no real plan other than generic.
When details of when, where, etc are finalized than media could be contacted on a 'good' news story that some 4x4 enthusiasts are gathering for their 9th(?) Annual Christmas Toy Cruise in support of the Childrens Hospital in Calgary.
blah, blah, blah.

Thats all i got.

The runs I went on in Vancouver were always out of a mall parking lot and maybe that is something we should consider.  If we use a non city lot then there is no need for an event permit and the related red tape it entails.  I know somone at COP that might be able to find out if we could use their lot to meet on.  Any one know of a large parking lot that is not city run we could use and how to contact it's owners?

if there is a problem with Bowness, i can probably secure us the Grey Eagle Casino parking lot.  just remind me at the meeting
