Title: Screaming in 3rd, under load
Post by: AV.NINE on December 15, 2010, 05:59:25 PM
Forget my other post, this is after more diagnostics.

The screaming sounds like a jet powering up. This is only in 3rd and only at ab0ut 2000 rpms (its non existent below that rpm and turns into a non audible high frequency above 2400ish).

Also it may be related, but when I let my clutch out at idle it makes some gawd awful noise. Once dis engaged its normal. The noise is a grinding type noise.

New clutch time?

it its making noise when you are letting the clutch out then i would say release bearing so ya new clutch time.

if it is just making the noise in 3rd then you have 2 separate issues, clutch and something wrong with 3rd gear.

the burning plastic smell um... not sure.

Im an idiot...

Missed step 16 when I installed my short throw shifter:

STEP 16. Apply bead of silicone around perimeter of base.
Tool: RTV Silicone

Was down to 1 liter of fluid in my tranny.

Was down to 1 liter of fluid in my tranny.

Hopefully no permanent damage? Glad you got it figured out.

Seems fine, whined in every gear today, filled up tranny as soon as I could. Works normal again. Will fix Saturday.

So you lost all the oil out of where the new shifter goes into the trans because you forgot a wee bit of silicone?

Yup.

Well see its a bit more complicated....

There is a stock rubber seal between the factory shifter and the tranny, rubber awkward thing. I reinstalled it with the shift which made it a pita to install. Looking at the instructions now, it appears you dont reinstall the seal and just use RTV on it.

Who knew?

Of coarse b&m dont mention anything about it. Just 1 crappy pic of the shifter half installed.
