It revs up to the normal 5250 rpm when my clutch is in or it's in nuetral. I go to hammer down in 3rd gear to pass someone and at about 3600-4000 rpm its like the rev limiter kicks in. Any ideas? '91 cherokee 5 speed 4x4

Wouldn't the throttle position sensor effect the idle to? Sorry for the questions but only one way to learn.

It didn't on mine. Hooked it up to a OBDII reader. Truck was off, and it was saying that the TPS was 30% open... just a wee bit out of whack. Mine decided to crap out on the way home from Deadmonton.... right in around 2700 rpm it would buck and dance.... that was an interesting ride when I gave it some gas to pass, or climb a hill.

maybe don't have to push the throttle down as much to get the same rpm at idle. only time mine did something like this was when my speed sensor was acting up, backed off around 3000 rpm and the speedo bounced around a little

And the whole truck was bucking and bouncing?

I had something like that, it was only at some times though, and it may or may not drive like that, turned out I had a bad spark plug wire(the connector to the spark plug and come loose from the wire)
but ya, what the others said
