I was wondering where I can buy Old Man Emu shocks here in Calgary for a decent price? - OR - Is there a similar shock to OME that I could purchase here in Calgary for a decent price? Something that would perform and ride the same? It would be for 2.5" lift on a 2004 TJ.

Napa got me some 5150 Bilsteins, better than the average rancho, about $140 ea.

I had a set of 5150 Bilsteins on my XJ with a 6" lift the rear shocks went for crap after about 5 months. When I called north shore about warrenty they told me to call Bilstein. When I called them they told me since it was used for offroad that there was no warrenty on them. I think it was the -35 to -40 temps that killed the shock but that comment from the rep stopped me from buying Bilsteins again. Just my 2 cents.

5150's most commonly fail due to over extension and over compression. I did it a few times several years ago. Since then, I've set a lot of people up 5150's properly bumpstopped and have never had an issue.
Just food for thought.
The OME is a good shock, but a bit soft for my taste. The bilstein is a slightly better shock. Northridge does both, and the prices should be somewhere around 105 ome, and 120 bilstein.

When you say soft, what does that mean exactly? Too much rebound, compress to quickly...? I would think soft was a good thing, then again I am new to this.

Suspension is always a balancing act. OME lean more towards reduced stability and improved ride due to a very soft shock.
I prefer something a little stiffer to improve handling, but still maintain a good ride.

So you are saying because it would be a more comfortable ride over day-to-day bumps it may not be as stable for cornering, say in off and on ramps, or is this stability on the trail?

Well, I'll see how it goes with the new pair of front shocks I put in. I had new bump stops that were longer to match the lift, but no extension limiter straps, so at full suspension extension, the shocks limited travel. Not good says Bilstein. Yes the 5150 is a "competition" shock and has a limited warranty, 30 days I believe. As for a jeep with a soft ride...drove for three weeks with no RF shock. Couldn't tell. Stupid leaf springs are so damn stiff, Rubicon was supposed to be the softer spring lift kit. Anyone with a coil spring jeep complaining is welcome to try mine for a week, but you may have trouble collecting your rig back from me and my sore back...
