Title: TJ Rear Recovery Hook..?
Post by: scott slade on January 07, 2011, 07:49:36 AM
Hello,   I'm looking to add the factory rear recovery hook to my 05 TJ...  I already have a trailer hitch on the Jeep...  my question is...  would one of those "D" rings that slides into the receaver hitch work well or are they not worth the money...?    :o

Just remember, that design was built to tow a trailer.
With tires, on road... Very little resistance (Compared to pulling on dead weight Jeep with another Jeep)

In the right (or should say wrong) circumstances, they will fail. Keep that in mind when you are staring at the 10Lbs of steel attached to thousands of pounds elastic band of a strap aimed directly at you, pulling out the receiver hitch equipped Jeep in front of you...  ;D

Once again, the yearly reminder picture. (Receiver ended up in the back seat)

And for good measures... Bent up stock hook on one side, ripped frame on the other... Be careful !

Ive pulled people out on a 1 inch receiver and hard it never let me down
I've pulled 4 door diesels out of mud holes and that was with 20 foot running start
My hitch never moved or bent and it sure as hell never ripped off and hit a truck

But I guess crap happens

Did the receiver break away from the rest of the hitch assembly?  Or was it the shackle and holder that flew because the pin broke?

Was the pin, sent the receiver flying...

I've also heard of the trailer hitch assembly breaking. It eventually will when put up to the abuse of 20 Ft running starts pulling 7000Lb immovable objects  ;D  They rust and are never maintained, just abused.

If you have to use a trailer hitch for recovery I would almost say feed a strap to the pin instead of inserting a big heavy steel projectile in the midle.
