Title: Intermittent Engine Problem
Post by: Falco on March 15, 2006, 08:54:51 AM
I was hoping I could get your input.

I have a Jeep Tj 1997 and I have been having an Intermittent Engine problem. It is very random, it occurs usually while driving at a steady speed or at idle speed.  The engine speed (rpms) takes a nosedive within about a second.  It drops below the normal idle setpoint and starts running very rough (chugging/stuttering). I need to pull off to the side from anywhere to a few seconds to a few minutes.  Then, it returns to normal like nothing happened. Any Ideas of what it could be? The check engine light will not come on. It happens every time I drive it short or long distances and we can't get it to happen when I bring it to the shop.

Thanks,

It very much sounds like the TPS. Just buy a new one (about $50).
Been there done that. The #1 reason i went through 4 TPS's under warranty on my 97 TJ......

Drumroll please.......

Wait for it.......

Power Washing the engine!!!!! Now i wrap the sensors in foil if i wash it.
