A buddy of mine wants to put some 33's on his rubicon. I'm a cherokee guy and know that it took 5" of lift for me to fit 33's, but will a 2" spacer lift allow him to fit the 33's? His jeep only sees the trails once in a while and I doubt he'll disconnect his sway bars.
Any input's appreciated.
cheers

If all he wants to do is have 33's and he isn't offroading at all he probably could get away with no lift. However, if he wants to offroad with the 33's then he'll need 2" spacers and a 1" body lift.
-
Chris aka/ Elsifer has that setup. 33's on stock ride rubi. Lots of rubbin on the trail but fine for the city. Looks like this...

now what about rims...can he get a ways with the stockers? I have no idea what offset rubis' have on their rims...if he goes for 33x12.5's will he be rubbing like crazy?
-
Tell him to get 4" of lift. It can still be done cheaply.
If it's looks he wants, it look wayyyyyy better then just stuffing big tires under with no lift.
If it's functionality he wants, it will be way better on the trails. Besides, a Jeep should have to avoid potholes...
------------------
As for wheels, with a 12.50" wide tire, he should get new wheels that have 3.25-3.75" backspacing or get some wheel spacers.
If he goes to a 33x10.50 tire, he could get away with keeping the rubi wheels.
-
I think we'll start with the 2" spacer lift since it's already sitting in my garage and just see how things look after the tires are on, that way we don't have to worry about shocks and disco's and driveline vibes and....for now anyways
What's the stock rubi tire size?
-
stock rubi tire is 31 I believe. Stock rubi rim is 8" wide so his 33x10.5 will be fine. if they are 12.5 he might want to reconsider. Bacspacing between 3.5"-4" will be fine. my 33x10.5 fit fine on 8"wide rim with 3.75" BS.
will be some vibes but not much.

This is a stock rubicon with 33x12.50 Boggers. He removes fender flares for wheelin.

Well as Woolf is saying, I want to go with 33's on my Rubi, but right now can't drop alot of cash into it. So pretty much, just want to know the easiest way to fit 33's on it, without having to do any major upgrading. I do hit the trails and once in awhile will bag the crap out of it, just like anyone else.
So all in all, can i get away with just putting 2' spacers on?? Or will i have to do more modifications in order to get away with 33's?
If it helps the tires will be 315/75R16D if these are even 33's, LOL
-
go with a 2"spacer and 1.25" boy lift and you will have minimal rubbing with 33x10.5's

those tires are actually 34.4" by 12.3" so you have no chance with only 2" of lift.
If you don't want to hack apart your fenders and rub on evey pot hole, you should get 4" of lift for 33" tires and 6" for 35" tires.
If that's no feasible, put in your 2" budget boost and keep you stock tires on for now. Save up and do it right later.
Also, you should know that it's illegal to drive around without fender flares.
-
So even with those tires, i would obviously have to get new rims instead of trying to put them on the stock MOAB to even mount them properly.... And with what you have just told me the 2' puck lift, and a 2' BL would probably just be a stupid thing to do to try and make this work out for a 1 or 2 time excursion.
I Guess if all else fails, can always put what i need on credit :)
Thanks again folks!

I just put 33's on my Rubi, I have 2" spacers and I find I do rub a little on the trail, but I figure a 1" BL should do the trick for me. Hope that helps

As already stated 3-4" of lift with coil spacers and a body lift, pretty cheap. If you go with a 285/75/16, you will not have to get new rims. They are a 33 but only about 11" wide so you will be able to get away with the stock rims. Also if you plan to wheel a bit you probably should get some new shocks to match the 2" lift.
-
The other thing you can do, if you have your heart set on running bigger tires then your lift can handle, is to simply add some "bump stop extensions".
These would basically stop your axle from traveling upwards to far, preventing the rubbing.
Lastly, if you wanted to, you should easily be able to sell your old rubi wheels/tires to be able to buy an new set of alluminum wheels with the proper back spacing.

Or wheels spacers, but those are not cheap which will allow you to use your stock wheels

Da Chopper, i respectfully disagree.
6" of lift is waaayyyy toooo much lift for 35's and 4" is too much for 33's.
Why? we want to keep the center of gravity as low as possible. You can wheel everywhere you want (more or less) by making sure you have properly set-up bumpstops.
Most guys that have done old school thinking regarding lifts, tend to lift too high. The best combo i have heard is 3.5 RE coils with 1" body lift and 35's.
It works very well.
i run 37's and have 5.5 + 1 bl and it is too much!!!! i have even advertised to trade my 5.5 coils for 4.5 or 4" coils.
33's with 3.5 coils is perfect!
Look at the above pic of a STOCK rubi on 33 Boggers. He did the entire pretty rock trail the hard way with minimal rubbing. All that he did? removed fender flares and disco'd the sway bar.
Milan, years ago cut his fender flares to allow more flex. It works, many of us followed his example. Milan has always gotten great flex with less lift.
No need to overkill something.

Hey Tom,
You still get out a wheeling a lot? I saw that you were trying to sell your Rubi...what's the deal there man?
My Jeeps outa commisoin right now but should be good to go by the middle or end of April and we should get out on some trails.

90% of Jeep with 33" that I've seen have at least 4" of lift. Granted it is possible that most people are "old school". After all, they also have CB's.
Don't forget those RE 3.5" coils are super stiff and actually yeild about 4" of lift. So we are kinda saying the same thing here. And this is indeed a nice set up. I ran the RE super flex 3.5" lift with 33" tires and had no problems.
I agree, if you are will to hack apart your Jeep, put in flat fenders, or take your flares every time you wheel, you can keep a LCG. I personally don't 'like to' drill holes in the tub, little lone ripping off the fenders. Also I don't like the look of it.
Anyhow there's more then one to get the job done.

Chris,
its been a while. It seems that most 4x4 runs are now on Saturdays....i work.
My rubi is for sale. i have not agressively tried to sell it but i will by the end of this month. i have my 97TJ still so i am going to build it. After messing around with lift combos, i think i now have it figured out. The rubi works well on almost any trail but :D most of my wheelin buddies are doing stupider and sicker stuff so.....its chop, cut and spend on the rubi or start again with the 97TJ.
My plan is to run 40" MTR's with 1 ton running gear and Chevy 350. i will stretch the wheelbase to about 104, comp cut the rear end, remove entire front fenders and build tube style fender/exo. Keep the cog very low and still allow the jeep to be street legal. This won't happen this year as i am collecting parts to do it. Also, i am hooked on racing in the CMRC Provincial Hare Scramble series. i just ordered a 2006 KTM 450EXC with lots of extras.
Wheelin will be on hold for a year unless i am lucky enough to find an extra passanger seat.
DaChopper,
That is true that a RE3.5 is like a 4 in other brands. Good point. i think 2" with bumpstops is plenty for 33's if running 3.75bs on the rims. 4 is more but not necessary and costs more to do it. There are lots of ways to do it, i agree :)
On www.rubiconownersforum.com there are lots of guys with very small lifts running 33, 35 and 37's on less than i ever imagined. That is what woke me up to the possibilities.
Tom :)

FWIW,
I have 35"s on 3" springs + 1-1/4" BL.
With VERY minor front fender trimming (inside the flares, out of sight) and the correct bumpstop's, I have no rubbing at all and still flex fine.
The height of my Jeep is typical of most people who run 33's.
