Title: Things I noticed after the lift
Post by: silverfox on February 04, 2011, 07:57:09 AM
Being that this is my first lifted vehicle (I don't think the heavier springs and an extra leaf in my 84 ranger count) I thought I would share a few things I have noticed over the past few days.

Anyway just a few of the things that struck me right out of the box..........I am sure there is more to come.  Looking forward to getting the tires for it.  And again thanks to Northridge4X4.ca for the great parts and Jay from Chanda Precision for the great install

Oh I forgot one other thing I noticed..........its Higher ::)

Sean I have love handles for ya!

Yes, it throws slush like a mofo now. Solution...wider (removeable) flat fenders...hopefully will be in production from Trailmods before too long.

If your traction control light is coming on, then check to see if your steering wheel is 100% centered...and if it is, then check the wiring coming from the ABS sensors. These also tell the computer what speed your wheels are turning at, and can cause issues if they're pinched. Also, Jay may have some insight on this and I'm sure he'll be more than happy to help - and he knows a thing or two about Jeeps  ;)

Other than that...just enjoy the lift...and just wait until you flex it out on the trail. You're going to grin from ear to ear.

Having to recenter the steering wheel after a lift is a must.  If it isn't, the TC will come on a lot.

I am pretty sure Jay did this.  Also I have to go back in, hopefully soon for some tires and a winch (subtle hint intended  ;) ) and we will check it then

I had the same issues with my 08 jk. After the lift every offramp would throw on my esp(?). I finally decided to just have it disabled because it was more dangerous than it did good. Braking and a little lose of steering on an off ramp isnt good.... The dealer CAN disable it, but none of them would.

I know this isnt any help to you... but just sayin.

In the owners manule there is a steering wheel dance that disables the tc, you don't have to go to the dealer for this.

This.  I love having to do steering wheel dances to disable crap.   :P

It only disables it to a certain point. But not the point needed.

If I recall.... This was 3 years ago....

Straight from the manual;
Partial Off
This mode is entered by momentarily pressing the ESP
OFF switch. When in Partial Off mode, the TCS portion
of ESP has been disabled and the “ESP/TCS Indicator
Light” will be illuminated. All other stability features of
ESP function normally. This mode is intended to be used
if the vehicle is in deep snow, sand, or gravel conditions
and more wheel spin than ESP would normally allow is
required to gain traction. To turn ESP on again, momentarily
press the ESP OFF switch. This will restore the
normal “ESP On” mode of operation.

ESP Off (4H Range Only)
This mode is intended for off-highway or off-road use
when ESP stability features could inhibit vehicle maneuverability
due to trail conditions. This mode is entered by
pressing and holding the ESP OFF switch for five seconds
when the vehicle is stopped and the engine is running. In
this mode, all ESP and TCS stability features are turned
off except for the “limited slip” feature described in the
TCS section. After five seconds, a chime will sound, the
“ESP/TCS Indicator Light” will illuminate, and the “ESP
OFF message will appear in the odometer. Refer to
“Compass and Mini-Trip Computer — If Equipped” in
Section 4 of this manual. To turn ESP on again, momentarily
press the ESP OFF switch. This will restore the
normal “ESP On” mode of operation.
NOTE:
• The ESP system will change to “Partial Off” mode if
the vehicle speed exceeds 40 mph (64 km/h). After the
vehicle speed is reduced below 35 mph (56 km/h), the
ESP system will return to “Full Off” mode.
• The “ESP OFF” message will display and the audible
chime will sound when the shift lever is placed in the
PARK position from any position other than PARK,
and then moved out of the PARK position. This will
occur even if the message was previously cleared.

I would think the off-ramp issue would be the ERM, Electronic Roll Mitigation, kicking in. With a Higher center of gravity, I imagine it would activate sooner... This is just from my experiences over the summer, seeing of the ERM was actually a noticeable thing. Only come on when accelerating on an offramp

If you find yourself correcting for minor movements while going straight or the return to center a little slower, there is a chance that with the lift your positive caster in front has decreased slightly. Not a big deal for an alignment shop to adjust.  putting a load (your family) in back of vehicle would increase rear weight therfore increasing positive caster for a little better feel.

No its not that.

Merely correction on bounce.  She tracks straight and true on even road with no wind but I will keep an I on it as things settle in.

Thank you for this.

I did the steering wheel dance on the side of Crowfoot last night after coming off the ramp from Sarcee trail

Freakin computer started to apply heavy outside front break when I was coming on to the ramp under power, almost tossed me for a little spin.

Stopped on the side and did the dance right then.  Damn computers, I don't need it making bad decisions for me I am more than capable of doing that myself.   8)

Your fuel efficiency will likely degrade due to increased frontal area; more of your suspension and axles are exposed, more frontal area means more drag.  When you mount the larger tires you will have more rotating mass which will hinder acceleration, braking and mileage.

Yup I assumed the fuel efficiency would drop.............however given that I didn't have a clue what the mileage was before I lifted it and put on tires I highly doubt I will notice the difference.

Low range acceleration is not noticeably hindered but I do notice a difference in say 4th and up.............again though not a concern of mine I didn't get my JK thinking I would be breaking any quarter mile records anytime soon  ;D. Braking I also assumed so I have been given myself a little extra room and watching for difference in lean and brake time.

In effect it is basically like learning your vehicle all over again.......I am anxious to get it out on the trails and see the differences in how it acts and relearning the nuances of 4" lift and 35's vs the stock and 32's
