Title: Do you keep or sell off your old parts
Post by: fug on March 20, 2006, 10:56:00 AM
So as I continue to upgrade the TJ I have an ever growing stack of parts that I no longer use and I'm wondering... Do you keep your old parts just in case? or sell them off and help offset the cost of the new upgrades?

I've got all my stock control arms/springs sitting around... I'll soon have a 4" RE SA kit taking up space (going with a RELA)... my stock TC is soon to be repaced with a rubicon 4:1 case... my stock D44 & 30 with 3.73 gears (soon to be replaced with a 4.56 ARB equipped D44/30 combo)... my soft top that never gets used cause I run a safari all summer and hard top in the winter.

So what do you think... sell it all or hoard it away just in case?    Anything you've sold off and then regretted a couple of months later?

some people will keep them incase they decide to sell the jeep. sometimes its easier to sell in stock form and or you will not gain the money back in teh upgrades so its easier to sell the aftermarket stuff afterwards or use it for hte next project in some cases

personally, i sell all my stuff.

i keep most things. And give people parts to people that need them. Since you usually cant sell stock stuff for much anyways. But when you RE lift is off i know some one that will take it in a few weeks if your ready to rid yourself of it by then

Fug.  If that soft top will work on at 2002 TJ I may be interested in buying if price is right.  :)

One of the reasons I threw this out there is I'm a pack rat of epic proportions.  I have parts for things I haven't owned for years... in fact it got to the point where I had 2 large storage lockers crammed full of parts for dune buggies, muscle cars, my Jeep and my bikes (did I mention I also can't just pick one hobby   ).  It was actually costing me a small fortune every month to just store stuff I was going to "fix up one day".

I moved recently and managed to get rid of a fair amount of stuff in the process... so now I'm torn between my "keep everything at all costs" nature and the more practical "save cash on storage and actually have a chance to find something" way of looking at things.

Keep it all .. cos that way one day you will have enough parts to build a complete spare Jeep

Plus .. why change the habit of a lifetime

Speaking from experience: you'll have no problem finding factory parts if you ever need 'em.

Over the last eight years I have mostly given away my factory items (suspension, some steering bits, extra D30/35 axles, etc), and sold some of the bigger ticket stuff (t-case, etc).

Now that I'm dropping that rig back to stock I'm having no trouble finding factory parts in really good condition.

I've been given a lot of the same kind of parts I've given away (mmm... Karma!), and have found lots of guys willing to trade up their stock stuff for my upgraded stuff + a bit of cash.

Be good to your 4x4 community, and your 4x4 community will be good to you.

Cheers!
