For recovery do you need something like this:
2" receiver shackle bracket

Or can you use one of these:
2" receiver tow ring
http://www.princessauto.com/trailer/trailer/trailer/towing/8063745-10000-lb-tow-ring
The shackle bracket seems more heavy duty but does not list a rating. I've seen people pull from just the receiver pin but that seems like a bad idea.
This would be for a loaded stock half ton using a 3" 27000lb tow strap.

I'm thinking that the warn would be better, because you can remove the pin a put the C through your strap, then hook it up again. Straps with big metal hooks or a chunk of chain on the end are alot more dangerous if things start letting go or straps break. A reciever with a shackle through it might be an option too.

Probably a whole boat load of factors to consider here:
1) type of receiver
2) how the receiver is mounted (welded, Grade 6 bolts, Grade 8 Bolts, number of bolts)
3) a receiver pin may be strong enough to pull from but are the holes on the receiver?, if you use a receiver with hook or shackle the major stress point should still be the pin.
As a choice between the two products, the warn is designed for recovery and would be my pick.
The PA tow ring is rated for 10,000 lbs towing not for shock loading.

You can get a sweet receiver shackle bracket from Modern Motors for something like $35. I have used a receiver shackle bracket, and a tow ring. Receiver shackle bracket wins hands down. It is nice being able to connect and disconnect the look of a recovery strap, rather than having to use another shackle as a link (another flying projectile if it breaks), or loop the tow strap on. Just my $0.02.

I have a Warn on my Jeep as you do in the picture, and the reciver mount is solid cast steel. Modern also carries the Crown Automotive reciever recovery points that resemble square tubing for a bit less but are still pretty stout. This would be the recommended way to go for sure. D-Rings are replaceable and safely connect to a strap. If you wrap the loop end of an elastic strap through a loop, and then back through on itself, the first pull you give it will lock that strap on there permanently. The D-Ring shackle reciever mount is definately the way to go :)

I know Modern carries them but they are out. I was looking for something for the work truck that'd be stock. All the other places I've called don't carry them.

Thanks for the offer Rob. I've got one in my Jeep but I wasn't about to lend it to work just yet. We're thinking of making some recovery kits for our work trucks (receiver, tow strap, road markers). Straps and markers are the easy part. Apparently the oil companies are requiring contractors to carry this stuff as part of the contractor grading system.
I called Titan but buddy didn't sound like he knew what I was after. Gregs could probably get them in in a few months when they order from Warn again. I think Modern will have some in a few weeks also. I was just trying to find something more easily attainable that would work as well as the d-ring receiver.

Dwight, look into the Ditch Hitch system. It is a pretty neat design. I know a few companies use them on their work trucks.
