Not sure if this is in the right category but I am looking to purchase a new upright 60gal compressor and wondering if anyone has had any recent experience buying one. Anybody know where to get a good deal? I have seen them at PA for $999 but not sure of quality. I looked at Napa and they have a DV systems one for $1169.
Thanks for your input.

check for 110 or 220, make sure you can change the oil, should be on most i think. cast iron pump is ideal from what i recall. the PA ones go on sale every now and again for 6-700$. crappy tire has a few too i think.

I have a 3 cylinder Eagle, similar, if not the same as they sell at PA. Bought it used about 8-9 years ago and its still running strong. Every now and then I remember to drain the water and check the oil. Fantastic compressor - I use it for everything - air tools, paint spray, sand blaster, blowing out neighbours sprinkler systems, etc.

UFA was cheaper, I think.

A big compressor and tank are sweet....it was one of the first things I planned to put in my garage when I bought a place...
But then a buddy told me about his cheap=arse crappy tire electric impact and sure enough I found one on sale for $40.....and it's wicket! The main reason I wanted a compressor was to run an impact, but this cheap electric impact works awesome with tonnes of torque...
Just something to consider ...
Edit:
It's this and when its on sale for 40 bones its bang=on

My parents got this for me for Christmas one year. I agree it is pretty sweet but I have other plans for the compressor as well. ie. my plasma cutter, other angle wrenches ...etc.

I picked up an Ingersol Rand 60 Gal 3HP vertical compressor a couple years ago for only about $660. I'm glad I made the purchase and wish I would have had the chance to have a good compressor much earlier. I can't remember who the distributor is, but they're just off of barlow on 61st in the SE. Came with oil and extra air filters....

Lowes has a big upright on sale, much better than PA and I think it's cheaper in price too.

Probably gonna be a 5hp so that means 240 volt 30 amp breaker to feed it and if you want to run a plasma cutter you need to allow for that as well
Do you have a panel in your garage ;)

Had to run a separate 220V cct for my plasma cutter. It and the compressor didn't play well together on the same circuit.

Hey Stevo,
Maybe you and I should have a chat. I don't have a panel in the garage but my panel is right on the other side of my garage wall.
I will pm you my number.

Seems better than Husky Pro.

Thats a good enough compressor. Just watch the heads. Buddy has one, and in 4 years he has had to do one head gasket, once. No big deal.
You just buy some blank gasket material and cut a new one for the head that goes.

That's good to hear. I looked for a review on this unit and couldn't find one.

I run a Miller Spectrum 375 Xtreme plasma with mine - no problem. The 375 is dual voltage 110 and 220. Most of what I do I can handle at 110V.
If you do have problems I believe the compressor draws the most at startup - maybe double - so the time to be concerned is when its kicking in. If it pops the breaker, reset, let the compressor start and then get back to cutting. I'm sure there are more electrically oriented folks who will frown on this, however, if its for hobby work this could be a more cost effective method than increasing the amperage to your garage.

Thats when my breaker would pop. On startup while running the plasma and did the same thing, reset breaker, fill tank go back to cutting. I have a HUGE tank but a plasma takes a LOT of air and after doing that a few times it got pretty old and a 2nd 200V circuit went it just for the compressor. Was pretty easy for me though as the compressor is right next to the panel.

Don't wait for the tank to fill - start cutting as soon as you have enough air so that the compressor stays running.
