Title: July 3 2011 run Waiparous
Post by: WhiteOut on June 25, 2011, 02:59:45 PM
Is anyone interested in going to Waiparous on July 3, just for a day trip? Plan would be heading to the falls. Req's below. Not an official CJA run, if you come there is a good chance you will be wheeling with non-Jeeps as well. I have not been on this trail lately, as such I am not too sure of the condition it is in. It can be anywhere from stock friendly, to difficult. If it becomes too much, we will be turning back.

31"+  MT/AT in good condition
Front and rear recover points, well attached to the vehicle
Full size spare
Enough food and water for everyone in the vehicle
Recovery gear
CB radio is a good idea
Change of clothes and footwear
Vehicle in good mechanical condition

Meetup at Smitty's in Cochrane at 9AM, leave by 9:30AM.

I'd love to go - either place.   It'll be good to hit the trails with some other people.   Eventually I'm going to get stuck out there if I keep going by myself!  Keep me posted on the details...

Cheers,

Adam

I don't think it will be too too bad, nice hot and sunny weather this week. I don't think that any one will have any issue with turning around and doing a different route if it gets too hairy, I don't want to break my stuff either.

Waiparous is pretty tame not that hard at all, most of the hard trails r shut down shouldn't have any problems and should be pretty dry. good place to learn.

Hello everyone,

This is sounding like a great trip for a relatively new 4x4 person like myself.

I should be picking up my new Jeep in a couple hours (stock 2007 Unlimited Rubicon 6 speed). If everything goes well, I hope to join you on Sinday and learn much from everyone.

Take care,

Jeff

Wife and I will be there.

I don't mind teaching newbies.  Always fun.

CB channel?

New folks should pack minor recovery gear..

JJ,

Thanks for the advice.

Can you make any recommendations as to what minor recovery gear would be good to have?

Thanks,

Jeff

Basic recovery gear for the newer people would be a proper snatch strap, no metal ends. A pair of work gloves in case you need to get your hands dirty or handle winch line. A couple of D-ring shackles if your vehicle is equipped with the proper mounts for them. For those using a rear trailer hitch for their recovery point, Warn makes a nice attachment that slides into the hitch and has a D-ring on it. Modern Motors has these is stock all the time, as should any of the 4x4 stores in town. Same goes for the snatch strap.

A proper set of front tow hooks that are mounted to the factory points, if you have an aftermarket bumper, then D-ring points or well attached tow hooks. A trailer hitch in the rear, aftermarket rear bumper or the stock factory tow point are what we look for front and rear tow points.

I have a 9000lb winch, shovel, work gloves and tools.

No recovery strap yet though

If you have a winch, you will want a tree saver and d-ring to go with it. You don't want to end up wrapping that winch cable around a tree.

Were do I get a tree saver? What is a snatch block for? I've heard people mention them before

Modern motor just off blackfoot they stock all the stuff there.

A snatch block allows you to make a stronger pull over a shorter distance using mechanical advantage. It's not vital that you have ont, but you'll eventually want one for your winch.

The tree saver and a clevis (d-ring) is a must-have. That's how you attach your winch line to your anchor point. Like 37sandrunning said, Modern Motors on Blackfoot carries them at a very good price.

Snatch blocks can also change the direction of your pull with a snatch block. Basically think of it like a pully that you can winch around corners with, or hook up to yourself to increase the mechanical advantage of your pull as W Squared said.

Tied up this weekend, but was out there on Saturday. Run to the falls was great and surprisingly dry. The river crossings are the lowest I've seen too.

Have fun!

Sounds good.

I will be in a light green 2007 Wrangler Unlimited (4 door) Rubicon (stock).

You can see Smitty's from Highway 22 on the left (west)  as you drive north into Cochrane. It is south of Hwy 1A.

See you guys tomorrow. I will probably arrive early at Smitty's and have breakfast before we head out. So, if anyone else wants to show up early and eat look for my Jeep and I am 6' 2" tall and will be in a long sleeve black shirt and black cargo pants.

Looking forward to the fun and learning!

Jeff

Just got home, what a day :o

Thanks to everyone who stopped when I had the death wobble and to Jason especially for his side of the road fix and his unstoppable winch.

If anyone has any, could I get some pics?  [email protected]

Good day.  No one likes it when a 6 hour day turns into a 12 hour, but we stuck together and left no man behind.  In the end a broken mud flap, and a worse off track bar was the only damage.

I think the first timers were exposed to a variety of wheeling scenarios, including advanced winching.

My pics.  Videos need to be converted.  Not much to see from the back of the pack!

PM me for original sizes

Whiteout,

Thanks for a great day! I will definately be in for more in the future.

Jason,

Thanks for the winching lesson. I especially liked your 'three point turn'on a 45 degree angle with your winch. Classic!

See you all on the trails!

Jeff

I've been really busy at work but as soon as I get a chance I'll upload a bunch of pics and post the link. There are some really good ones! Hope someone got some great ones of me as well.

Cheers....
