Title: which dealer in Calgary is "mod" friendly?
Post by: raykoala on July 19, 2011, 03:55:23 PM
I bought a 2011 rubicon recently, before I bought it I told my wife I will never lift it, just keep it in stock. But after a few times wheeling with guys in this forum, I got totally brain washed, so many temptations to get my jeep lifted with large tires. I spent 2 days to persuade my wife and I got the permisson to lift my JK. Now the only problem is the factory warranty, are there any "mod" friendly jeep dealers in Calgary area? I am not expecting to get the drivetrain parts warranted after I mod it, I just don't want chrysler void my other warranty ( like engine, transmission, electronics, etc) due the lift.
Thanks very much for any advise.

The guys at Crowfoot seem to be ok with it (I don't have a lift, but I was asking them about it).  As far as I understand though is that putting on a lift doesn't void your warranty, however if they can prove that the lift was the direct cause of a failure then they can deny coverage.

Go in person and ask the service manager, if they don't know then find someone who does. Get it in writing.

They can also deny warranty coverage on abuse.

I have had warranty work performed on my lifted TJ at a dealership (Renfrew Chrysler none the less). Unless they can prove that the modification is responsible for an issue they will cover it. Now, that said they could potentially dig pretty deep to find an issue with your modifications. Therefore you must know your stuff, they tried to blame my lift for my issue with the front drive shaft. Ultimately because I was able to call their BS it was covered under warranty.

pretty much what those 2 guys said. ask first and find a dealer that will honor warranty even with the lift and tires. im partial to Big 4 Motors cause i work there. and we are pretty good with that stuff. or we can do the lift for you as well. we have a few brand new jeeps lifted and never have a problem with them.

the above posts mostly ring true from my experience.

I will add that most dealers say that any mods they both sell and install will not void your warranty in any way. (which doesn't make ANY sense from a logical perspective but is an awesome "business decision" from a profitability standpoint).

Big 4 seemed to be in the know about the laws regarding the subject at least, in that they understood that the law says the mod needs to have caused more than 50% of the problem to jeopardize warranty.

Tower made statements of their policy that blatantly contradicted law, such as "If you install a snorkel, we will assume you've been mudding and all coverage will be denied" (straight from the keyboard of their service manager, Baron Ellis).

In the end I decided to just get a 2 " lift, a winch, bumpers, etc first, and worry about the more serious mods after the warranty is over.

Have a read over this if you haven't seen it before.  Something to keep in mind anyway.

this coming at a time when any chrysler dealer should be bending over backwards to keep a good customer around. ive never heard of "flagging" jeeps or trucks because they are modified. heck im looking at a newer Viper with a supercharger on it that still gets warranty... i think that dude got the wrong end of a fumed off service manager or service advisor.
