Title: open differential auto vs 5 speed - are they the same??
Post by: indycalgary on July 30, 2011, 10:01:10 AM
Can i use a 8.25, 3.07 ratio rear diff in my 5 speed manual trans jeep cherokee sport if it came out of a jeep with a automatic transmission.  I am assuming i can?
And how will it effect my 4x4 ability?  Currently my diff is LSD.

As long as the front and rear gear ratios match, you can do whatever you wish.  I have doubts that a 3.07 ratio came from an automatic, but as my wife, I'm not always right!

What!!!!!? Adrian, you confuse me.

3.07s should have been out of a standard transmission (AX-15) Jeep.

Jeep XJs came in several standard gearing ratios:

3.07:1, manual transmission, I6 engine.
3.54:1, automatic transmission, I6 engine with Dana 44 rear differential.
3.54:1, manual transmission, I4 diesel engine with Dana 35 rear differential.
3.55:1, automatic transmission, I6, V6 engines; manual transmission, I4 engine.
3.73:1, automatic transmission, I6, Tow Package, UpCountry Package.
4.10:1, manual transmission, V6; automatic transmission, I4 engine.
4.56:1, automatic transmission, I4, offroad or tow package.

Sorry, stupid iphone, i ment as my wife says, i'm not always right!

And i had doubts that the 3.07 ratio came in an automatic, they are slow enough in my I6 yj manual, let alone an auto!

Indy... usually the gear ratio in differentials on a stock XJ are different for auto or manual tranny.

You will have 3.07 gear ratio in most  stock XJ with manual tranny and 3.55 gear ratio in most XJ with automativ tranny.

So your question is wrong... Basically if your 8.25 came out of an automatic tranny it should have 3.55 gear ratio and NOT 3.07.

So your XJ has 3.07 gear ration and you are trying to put in a rear axle with 3.55 gear ratio. The front gear ration should match the rear gear ratio in your diffs/axles.

So... No it willl not work

Okay this is getting absolutely redundant...Stupid actually.  Go get an 8.25 rear end, from a manual trannied xj, swap the thing in. If it has ABS sensors , so what, leave em there, cut them off...voila. open carrier and matching gears...there is your cheapest and easiest option. End of story.
Obviously you dont have the capacity to understand what has been said over and over. If you figure you need a ltd slip for real 4wd, then you need to search "lockers"..crappy jeep ltd slips rarely work worth crap, get over it.
If you havent figured out how to remove a rear axle from your XJ (yup, thats the model designation for your jeep!) from what we have said, or what a haynes manual can provide, you serve zero purpose to this club whatsoever.
If you bought a rear end from an auto XJ (theres that word again) , take it in and have your ring and pinion swapped, and expect to pay to have it done.
Or keep posting, theres always someone here to hold your hand, i just dont know how much more we can dumb it down for ya. ::)

Now seriously folks...I've known Aaron since I built my first Jeep(he even helped me a fair bit).  Good guy, but till ya get to know him can seem a bit edgey at times.  Usually means well but could use some coaching with his people skills ::).

Let's all be friends, k?

when things are sold at severe discount, it is best to buy, and not hem and haw.  i had what you needed. for cheap.  you weren't sure and sat on the fence.  someone came with cash and took it.  !

to many times people say 'yea i'll take them' only to be told (after the seller 'holds' the parts for a week) that 'something' comes up.  i've got a garage full of parts that are testaments to this ;)

if you want it, go buy it.

Wow Harsh people on here ...... yes i understand...

Then please stop posting about your rear end issues, same posts, same questions since your first one back in May. You probably just need a bearing or tighten your lug nuts or something.

Don't worry about LSD, drugs are bad !  :)

Sorry Indy, i can seem a bit harsh but you needed a harsh answer...the same question is still recieving the same answer. Ditch the LSD for an open carrier..simple. Or call every wrecking yard from here to edmonton to lethbridge and try to find another 8.25, no matter what is in it, you are gonna be swapping gears no matter what. (unless you find that golden turd with 3.07's and an LSD. You dont need us to hold your hand to do it. Read a manual on how to remove a rear end. So when that axle comes up you have cash and tools in hand. My diff sold to the guy who had cash that day, and was first to respond. Same with everything else i was selling.
Stop asking the same question and expecting a different aswer, learn how to do it yourself if you want it done cheap/free, and instead of posting the same question aimlessly, use google search...the interweb is full of useful information.

I shudder to think what happens when you break something on the trail...

Anyways no worries i will be deleteing my account, internet is bad enough worldwide thought locally it would be better.
Bye and thanks for the people that actually help me.

Yes i found a open rear diff but at a major cost ..... but 3 months if long enough. too bad someone on here could have made some good money.

You asked about affecting your 4x4 capability and i answered that the 3.07 will be the BIGGEST problem in affecting your ability to 4x4.
