hey everyone i have a 1998 ZJ with the 4.0l I-6 i went 4x4ing today and everything went well but when i was done i tried to put it back into 2wd and it was really hard to move the shifter I think its stuck in part-time and theres no way to move it, it also make a hard clunking noise if i back up or go forward or turn sharpe. Any help is very appreciated

Are you trying to shift while the trans is in gear?
Should be in neutral, rolling forward at about 5kph

You can try neutral. Or park, reverse and drive... Sounds like your driveshaft u-joints and axle shaft u-joints are shot. Gear selection won't fix that.
Were you in low range all day?
If your t-case linkage looks ok, I'm assuming the non maintenanced jeep had oiling issues inside the tease and something is now siezed up inside.

So i got it to pop back into 2wd but the tranfers case was full of oil/muddy thick stuff I also found a line disconnected its just hanging there attacted to the front diff. I cleaned out the TC and refilled it with clean fluid I havent tried putting it back into 4x4 yet. Thanks everyone for the reply's

sounds like its time for a diff service as well.
might wanna change out the tcase fluid again in a little bit too.............. mud = jeep death

im gonna change it in a day or two Its still not100% when i turn shape it make a clunking noise Hopefully i can figure it out and dont need a new TC......Im glad i didnt buy that 3.5" lift for it yet....

it has a hard time shift back into 2wd the linkage pops off cause i push to hard When it is in 4wd or part-time it clunks reqally bad and hops when i turn or go straight
It also has a whinning noise on drivers side front and a clunking noise not nearly like it does when in 4wd. Ive changed out the TC fluid and it was cleansd I also put new fluid in front diff. My U-joint on drives shaft and axels are tight

Check the joints on the front axle shafts, especially if they are CV joints. If there's any grease leaking out or noticeable tears in the boot, that's a good indication it's toast.

jack the wheel up and wiggle the tire. rock it back and forth? do you feel anything? a little clunk? spin the tire; hear a click.
the sounds you indicate only lead to three things. ball joints, unit bearings or ujoints. if its not one of those three, then :'(

i really think its my unit bearing and axel U-joints. They are getting replaced on Thursday Is the Unit bearings are in the hubs so the whole hub needs to be replace im gathering? THANKS for all the help
-
yes it is a complete unit. fairly easy to swap out, especially after you've done a couple. ujoints suck. but they are doable too. grab a haynes manual; it will tell you how to do this all.
good luck

were you playing in deep mud? stuck at all? might wanna flush yhour tranny and replace the filter. water and ZJ tranny's don't mix

Did you check the linkage to make sure its not binding or has a bunch of mud stuck in it?
