Need a new trany for my tj, sucked water in the breather line before I had a chance to extend the lines. Gears are slipping now so I was wondering if I could use a xj trany from the same year(97) or any other options? Also it's automatic now, so will a standard would be nice.

Auto to Manual swap is possible but a lot of faffing about (installing clutch pedal etc).
Yes you can swap in a tranny from an XJ. What engine do you have, the 4.0? I have a couple of auto tranny's available for ya if you need. PM me if you're interested.

I thought XJs had the AW4 and the TJ used the 42re?

A quick google search showed me that the TJ never used an AW4(which is what comes in the XJ). So I'm going to say no you can't use an XJ tranny unless you want to swap/splice the wiring harneess/computer. If you have a 3spd auto its should be a 32re/rh or something like that.
If you want to swap to a manual you can use an XJ manual tranny but will need to find a TJ pedal assembly.

My bad I thought it was just the ZJ's that used the 42RE.

It is ZJ exclusive in those years. The early TJs got the 32rh(904/999) until later when they got OD. No idea what year that happened.

The TJ got the overdrive in 2003. The Girlfriend has it in her 2003 and my 2002 has the 3-speed.
