Moving to an acreage!!!! YAAAA!!!
But not high speed from shaw or telus. Boooooo! Just got my PVR a few months age too! Dang it!@!@#!\
So does anyone here use xplornet or cellular wireless sticks? My parents use Xplornet and aren't all that thrilled with them. Plus the more I read about them the less I like them.
Hoping to get something fast enough for netflix.

Smoke signals or if you're within range a string tied between two tomatoe juice cans.
-
check out Platinum.ca they have the bandwidth and data allowance for streaming movies and such ($50 / month). my cousin uses them and they are OK if you have a clear line of sight to a tower. think the startup costs are nasty but with contract might not be so bad.
-
The 3G and 4G wireless sticks are probably not a solution for you. The Canadian providers no longer seem to offer a truly "unlimited" data plan...they seem to hose you pretty hard if you're using it a lot.

Telus charges $70 a month for upto 10GB and then applies over usage fees. Not really sure how much I would use....
-
regular web surfin on my phone at work is 1GB.
I typically go over by a couple dollars. I am very reserved with the phone too, ie no videos or pr0n. (i know!)
at home I use about 200-300GB per month and don't use netflix. netflix can use approx 1GB per hour for HD content.
10GB is peanuts nowadays but depends on your useage.

who do you currently get your internet through? I am pretty sure they can tell you what your usage history has been.

We had Xplornet when we first moved..... it sucked dead bears. We now use Telus (but that doesn't help you.... sorry).

I still have xplornet on the farm and fyi Trev, it still sucks dead bears. If only Telus serviced that area id switch.. Its not bad when its up, but if theres a storm, or any sort of cloud cover it seems to drop out pretty frequently.

Can you stream video with it?
Do you ever get your band width throttled? I've heard that if you download too much that they will drop your speed.
-
I have watched some streaming video out there but it plays for 10 seconds, then buffers for 20, plays for 7, buffers for 20.... Also for large downloads cant say that ive ever noticed them throttle the connection, as its pretty slow on a good day :D
Plays WOW ok tho not that i would know... ::)

It somewhat depends where your moving. I live in Simon's Valley area just north of city and have "efirehose" micro transmission and probably 2-3 miles from tower. It is reasonable good, however at really peak times it can slow down. If the kids and I all have our computers going it slows up as well.

Did some research and got some prices.
Xplornet is $85/month(Plus install and hardware purchase) for upto 5mbps download and get this: only .5mbps upload! and 30GB per month. Also thye throttle the speed back if you DL too much and bog the server.
Telus data Smart hub, is $70/month for 10gb, speed is 4-7mbps dl and 5mbps uL. Overage usuage is $20/Gb.
Right now I'm leaning towards the Smart Hub and not doing any kind of streaming.

sweet Jesus...
"Overage usuage is $20/Gb."
I think I'd rather just accept that I live in the sticks and play with said sticks...

I took my laptop out to my parents acreage yesterday which has Xplornet. I tried just some web surfing and then streaming utube and Netflix as well as running some speed tests.
At first things were super slow, just normal surfing was painful. Then as soon as I started netflix it picked right up. Thee first speed test was around 1mbps and then all the rest after that were hitting right around 5mbps. Not sure what to think. It was definitely slow at first but later was just fine. Only thing I can think of was that a neighbor was on the internet at the same time just as I started and then got off.
Its pretty stupid, either we go wireless and have the speed to DL lots but not the capacity or go with Xplornet and have better capacity but not the speed........

i cancelled my shaw internet at home because i have an internet stick as im on the road a lot. Sasktel is unlimited for $75 a month. and they didnt have any problem giving to me with my alberta adress. BUT you have to get it from a sasktel store, after that you can do everything on the phone or online. they even fedexed me a new stick when i rolled over mine with my chair haha. i dont know how fast it is but its streams youtube peice of cake.even on fringe areas up north. my $.02

You don't pay an any roaming charges using it here? Which network does it use, Telus?
-
sorry about my attention span. it works anywhere in the nation same price, and i went to oregon to get a boat last year and was using it the whole time and didnt see the bill change so im not too sure.i got it a few years ago so im guessing the unlimited business may not be offered anymore. spend the $200 bucks and just buy one instead of signing a contract. then you can just bail one day if you hate them haha
-
Hmm went to Sasktel's site and here is what the fine print for you plans says:
*Fair Usage Policy: In order to ensure an optimal network experience for all customers, SaskTel reserves the right to reduce data speeds on all Data Plans for any customer who exceeds 10GB of usage during a single bill cycle, 200 MB out of province usage cap. Customers exceeding this threshold are charged $0.10/MB for additional usage.

swines! haha i just surf and download random music or few movies so it does good for me. i just like how it seems to work anywhere i go. good luck in the search

Picked up a smart hub yesterday. Works ok, speed really varies from 2.5-4.0mbps. Watched a netflix last night with it and it briefly paused about 2-3times, not really enough to be annoying. We'll see how quick I rack up 10GB. Not planing to watch movies much. Was just bored last night as we are moving and everything is in boxes and the TV was packed as well.
