Title: YJ vs TJ Steering
Post by: BlackYJ on September 26, 2011, 01:02:44 PM
I was looking at my steering on the weekend and some of the TREs on starting to look a little tired and it get me thinking about the currie upgrade.  Now the currie is not available for the YJ but all coil sprung Jeeps.

My question is, is the YJ steering setup not the same as the TJ, XJ, MJ, LJ?  What is the difference because they look the same

They are different.  YJ the tie rod goes from knuckle to knuckle and the drag link attaches close to the passenger side wheel (T style steering I believe).  The TJ is a inverted Y steering.  The drag link attaches to the passenger steering knuckle and the tie rod from the drivers knuckle attaches to the drag link.

Ah yes, I see the difference now.  Stupid YJs.   ::)

So is there any reason YJs could not use the Currie setup?

for the price might as well do a one tonne conversion.

you know, those leaf spring jeeps don't have to worry about steering geometry

I bought the BIGDOG stuff for my CJ many moons ago.  Rugged Ridge bought them out - and are selling it now I believe.  It was Moog Tierod ends and a heavy wall tube.

At the time you couldn't buy the four replacement MOOG ends for the same price.

Hey Johnny, I'm not interested in going to 1 ton TREs since the stock ones are 16 years old and have held up this long.

That Rugged Ridge does not look too bad and I will have to look into it a little further

Hey Scott,

If this is the Inverted T steering kit from RR, then  you will want to consider one of these..

It will stop the roll on the drag link. Its something I got used to on my XJ, but when I swap out my axles I will be adding that in to get rid of the creepy dead spot in the steering as the draglink rolls up and down.... Normally.... as per RR  ::)

Just get Jay at Chanda to fab one up out of DOM, way better than anything RR makes.
