Title: Hard top - to keep or not to keep

So i got both a hard and soft top with my new old 2006 TJ. Before this i owned an XJ so im not 'in the know' with all things TJ.
What im wondering if it is worth while to keep the hard top, or sell it and run the soft top year round?

Any info is appreciated

sell it. i have never had a hardtop since 97. The TJ heater is very good.

Get rid of it, even running down the highway everyday I usually don't have all windows in until December. The heater is more than enough.

I debated the same thing, if you search you will find the thread with more response s to help you decide. That being said I would wait till you experience some minus 30 weather before selling. also consider the costs to replace anything that breaks or rips on the soft top that would make it useless in the cold or rainy months.

I say keep it.  I like to switch it up in the winter and it's way quieter on the highway.  And you can open the rear window to get crap out of the back.  Try that at -40 with zippers.

I think you've got to be pretty die hard or have an extreme lack of space to want to get rid of your hard top.  I love my soft top in the summer, but I can't fathom having it in the winter.

I am on the keep it side... sell the soft top.  I did that with my TJ... sold the factory softtop and I run a safari top and soft doors.  It's way quicker and easier to go topless and it keeps you dry-ish in a rainstorm.

Very good points, these were the kinds of opinions i was looking for. Ill keep it, im not that hard up for cash anyway.

I had both sides slashed and the dealer replacements were $348. each! I found a brand new pair on Ebay in Florida for $199. for both but I was afraid to leave it parked on the street after that.  The following year I never took the hardtop off again.

The others are right about heat. I went soft through one winter and had no heat or comfort problems.

If you re parking on the street with the soft top, just leave it unlocked. Chances are good that a theif will check the doors first, easier then crawling in through a window. Also just don't leave anything in plain sight. Having your door opened and your change stolen from the cup holder is way cheaper then replacing windows!
