So I found a great deal on KIJIJI for a winch plate. This is something I have been looking for for some time, as I am on a tight budget and can not afford nor justify spending $100+ dollars on a peice of metal and was hoping to put the savings into a better winch. So anyways, I was the first person to call the owner yesterday and had it put on hold for me till I could pick it up sometime between yesterday and saturday. I told the seller that I would call when I was on my way, which is what I did no more then 15mins ago. I got a voicemail,left a message thinking all was well. However, the seller calls back and tells me someone came and picked it up last night. Now this someone did not call, did not email, but just showed up and bought it out from under me. The seller assumed it was me as I was the only one that had contacted her. Basically, this is poor edicate and I am super fumed off. Now, I know some of you out there will say it was my own fault and that I should have covered my bases better, or that Kijiji is a "free for all" of some sorts, but its not!! I think its dishonest and slimy to do what the now new owner of this winch plate did.
Anyway needed to vent!

So many people on Kijiji ask for you to hold something and they never show up, in the mean time you have turned down other people. Now, I don't hold anything I have for sale. If you want it, be the first person at my house with cash.

on the other hand there is lots of people that says "keep it for me and i'll be there at the end of the week" and never shows up... like Frazer ;D unless it's toyota parts

Might not like this but I love scooping stuff on guys who are "going to be there in a couple days". Hell I've bought a jeep out from under a guy while he was looking at it. ProTip... have cash be ready to roll. You'll get better deals

Whoa there buddy, YOU were outright LIED to by the seller.
I am the guy that bought the plate last night.
I called her (yes, I talked to her first) and said I could come right away and pick it up. She said 2 people were interested in it already and one guy said "consider it sold" but you know how Kijiji buyers go, like previously stated, they say hold it for me and then never show up.
I have sold quite a bit on kijiji and usually have at least 2-3 for sure sales until another buyer finally picks it up, that's with pretty much any thing I sell.
Don't go off on me for getting there first, anytime I see a good deal on something I want, I drop what I'm doing and go get it.

Looks like zero support from anyone here so far. ;D Oh and none from me either. Kijiji is a tough market place. I'll never hang onto any item for someone that hasn't stopped on by with a deposit. Then and only then would I expect the seller to hang onto it for a while, but certainly not indefinantly either.
Gotta learn to move quicker than the older folks cause they know how to grab the deals. Of course I only assume you might be younger than vinman.. ;D

Vince Vince Vince!! Well I guess I can't blame you, as it appears this was the sellers error! Still fumed, but glad it went to someone on CJA which helps craddle my broken heart!... That being said, I disagree with most of the comments made so far! I work 830-5 Monday to Friday like most people and do not have the luxury of "dropping what I'm doing" to go pick something up. (not to mention I had to deal with some dummy furnace installers last night after work and was not available). And like most people, I wouldn't be on Kijiji if I had the cash to pay retail. Furthermore, I would consider myself a kijiji enthusiastest, selling more than buying, and I have not once sold something out from under someone who has said they would come pick something up in a day or two's time. With smart phones, email and text message, heck even normal phones its easy to make a quick call or tell buyers who are next in line that if the sale falls through they will be contacted. It all boils down to courteousy for your fellow man/women. And if you can't make this concession for those trying to save a buck or two on things they need then you should drop you stuff at a pawn shop and be done with it!

In defence of the seller, I thought it was very honorable of her to take the time and phone you to mention the item had been purchased by somebody else. I thought was pretty decent.
Saw your post after I posted Dom. I'll refrain from any further age conversation for personal reasons. :P
And it's not because I forgot what we were talking about. :D

Well, you're entitled to disagree if it makes you feel better...but please understand that most folks on Kijiji have been burned in the past, and the first person who shows up with cash will normally walk away with the item.

Coming from someone who has been burned plenty of times, sorry you feel that you have been wronged but at least she saved you a trip out by calling you and telling you it's sold. I sell a fair bit of things on there and the second it is sold I delete the ad. Just my two cents

Kyle, to bad you didn't get that winch plate. sucks. but its not the sellers fault. in fact, i have a garage full of parts on hold, and if i recall, even HELD soemthing for you, that you never picked up............ but i hold so much stuff i don't even remember what it was........ or when... but i don't care. it happens. thats life.

Disagreeing does nothing for my feelings, its about principles! The principle that you don't treat people like that, especially when they technically are doing you a favor! The favor being, coming to your house and paying you for your stuff that you no longer want or need. Albeit you as a buyer want said stuff, but most companies spend millions of dollars a year in advertising alone just to try and get people to do this, and what do most kijiji sellers pay $20 bucks if that and usually its nothing! If business' operated in such a way they would go under in no time at all, and arguably if you are selling something you are a business. Finally, the sheer fact that the first person to show up with cash gets the product baffles me, especially when someone tells them "consider it sold." Where as the graciousness and courtsey towards others gone in our society and when did a man's/women's word start to amount to nothing at all?!? Sure I can understand that if someone was wishy washy and said, "I might be able to make it, but i don't know," then fine the first-come-first-serve premise works, go for it! But for a seller to give a product away (aka sell it) in such a manner is not only greedy, lazy and as mentioned dishonest. This is not how I work when selling things online! I have always given ever interested party the opertunity to purchase whatever product I happen to be selling and I never lost a sale nor have I ever had any issues. Not to mention its not that hard, its really quit simple!
If you want to be a jerk about it go ahead thats your prerogative! But I won't work that way and I certainly won't be happy about it when it happens to me.

I think in hindsight, I was really stocked about the winch plate cuz it was the last peice of the puzzle...But that doesn't mean everything I said in the previous post doesnt stand!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dude, I think that maybe you need to go get your oil changed. If you're getting this worked up about a winch plate off of Kijiji, you're gonna get real excited when you break something on the trail that we can't put back together for you.
A person's word means something to me when I know them. Until then, my decade of experience managing casual employees has made it blatantly clear to me that many people's word is worth the paper it's written on. The sooner you stop deluding yourself, the happier you will be. The reason that "first at my door with cash" takes the item is that most buyers don't stand by what they say either.
If you're not out any money, I'd chalk it up as an object lesson in the realities of the way that most people act and move on with life.

I have very low expectations of anyone and anything on kijiji. I wouldn't even assume that they actually have the item they are trying to sell or that they even own it. I don't like giving kijiji people my address. On a local special interest forum like this or some of the other local forums I have bought and sold through (R/C, Nismo) it's quite different, people generally tend to not be a) complete idiots and b) full of keerap, although there are always the exceptions which prove the rule.
My personal policy is if you want me to hold an item than you will need to publicly post in the forum that you will take it and then if you don't you can expect to be harassed and/or mocked in the forum.
