Title: Durango Steering Box Swap and resultant issues - need advice
Post by: TJ Sparky on October 16, 2011, 11:30:51 AM

So after reading about the Durango Steering Box swap I decided to pull the trigger and swap mine out. The original one in the TJ was leaking really bad; worked fine but leaked a ton and went through buckets of fluid. The swap was really easy and only took about 2 hours. BUT now that it's all done he are the issues I'm having:

 - steering wheel is no longer centered (take the wheel off and re-center?)
 - when I turn left it really wants to go left/when I turn right it really wants to go right. (probable allignment?)

Any ideas? Has anyone else done this swap?

  Thanks!

Can you not adjust the steering wheel position by adjusting the drag link?

So it turns too quickly? If I remember correctly my XJ box was 3.75 turns lock to lock, the Durango box was 3 turns lock to lock.

Here's the info you need for centering the steering http://www.stu-offroad.com/steering/align/align-1.htm (http://www.stu-offroad.com/steering/align/align-1.htm)
and as long as it gos left when you turn the steering wheel left and right when turned right it sound like it works like it was intended to remember your comparing it it to an old and possibly worn out steering box

I double checked the measuments for the "toe in" and I'm an inch out. I loosened the two clamps to adjust it but the damn adjusting sleeve won't budge........FML

After loosening the clamps, lots of lubricant to break the sleeve loose, and a screw driver in the crease on the sleeve.

After PB Blaster, a torch. a ton of swearing and a pipe wrench the adjustment bar broke loose. I got it all working again. Thanks to all for the help!!!
