Knox will be leading an open run On Saturday, Nov 26th:
Open Run Saturday 26th November.
I'm aiming at keeping this as stocker friendly as possible, but conditions can always change that... If you've got good tires and listen to helpful advice from experienced members you should be fine.
We will give your jeep a one over and if you do not meet the minimum requirements do not expect to be able to come along. The requirements are there for other peoples safety.
Meet is at the wide spot on McLean trail (gravel section) just past the store for 8:30. 9:00 AM for a driver's meeting, and wheels rolling at 9:30
Requirements:
Vehicle in good mechanical condition with no fluid leaks
31" AT/MT tires in good condition. There will be snow, so be prepared to air down to 15 psi or lower.
Front and rear recovery points
Full sized spare
Ample food, water, spare (warm) clothing and spare footwear for everyone in the Jeep
All non-members must sign waivers, as well there will be waivers for minors, if you plan on bringing a child's friend let me know and we will get you a waiver to have signed by their legal guardian beforehand if they are not accompanying you.
A good attitude, weather and conditions can change quickly
Recomended:
CB Radio
Recovery gear (snatch strap, shackles, maybe even a winch)
Full set of hand tools for your Jeep
Extra fluids (engine oil, gear oil, tranny fluid, washer fluid)
Shovel and axe or bow saw

think 33 will be big a nuff for this run
-
It really depends on what Knox choses to run. The trail choice is up to the trail leader, and I don't want to put words in Knox's mouth.
Based on what I saw today, 33 inch MT tires that are in good condition will probably be more than enough for pretty much anything in McLean by the time we hit the end of November...but if conditions change drastically between now and then, all bets are off. In any case, the final decision is the trail leader's to make.
-
ok thanks i have new 33 goodyear duratrac think they will be ok was going to go out today but having trans probes so fixing that this week an next weekend so

Kept meaning to make this thread.. thank you for the kick in the arse to get it going :)

I will happily tail gun for ya - for once I know ahead of time what I'm doing that weekend, and I can finish my packing for Houston on Sunday ;D
-
Excellent, anyone up for mid gunning?

I should be able to show up for this.
-
If there isn't enough snow in the mts. for sledding I will be there... I will confirm by November 25th.
-
I will be there... I can tail gun if you want.
-
Going to try and make it for this.
-
So, will 32" winter tires work on this run? At that point in time I will be in ice mode. I know last winter I was pushing snow with my bumper and making headway.
I should have all of my recovery equipment replaced by then. Had the whole bag taken from the Jeep last month. Just waiting on a winch controller.
-
One thing that I'll say about runs at this time of year - nobody really knows ahead of time what you'll run into. The best idea is to prepare for both snow/ice and mud, as there are lots of sections that will be frozen solid, and others where folks will break through the ice and be up to your frame in mud. I've seen runs at this time of year go both ways.
The final decision is up to Knox as the trail leader....but understand that if there's been a fair amount of mild weather prior to the run, he may choose to ask you to head back home. Also, for everyone coming on the run, please remember that Knox did specify a good attitude - this will be a run with a fair number of folks, and we may be encountering some challenging conditions....so understand that everyone will enjoy themselves more if we're all patient and handle things with a smile.

i just like to hear my self talk....

Hey guys, before I mention the possiblity of going out with you to my kids, just wanna make sure me and my totally stock ZJ Orvis(stock sized winter tires) would be welcome to join ya? The presence of my worldly wisdom and positive attitude will largely depend on your response to my inquiry :P. I know full well alot depends on current conditions at the moment of departure and the mix of people/units that show up for the trip, but is it the objective of this outting to be as 'stocker friendly' as possible or not? Just askin' ;)
-
This run is definitely intended to be stocker friendly....but based on Knox's posted requirements, the minimum tire size is 31", with good quality AT or MT tires. I don't know what size comes stock on your ZJ.
From what I saw on the weekend, the ice on the mud holes is still not even close to supporting a Jeep's weight....so unless we see some pretty cold weather to build up thicker and stronger ice, you will probably find making this run on dedicated winter tires to be somewhat difficult.
-
Indeed, My goal is to keep it very stocker friendly but we really won't know the conditions due to the time of the year until the day of the run :( if the holes are frozen solid, dedicated winters will likely do very well.
I plan on heading out this weekend to see how it is, but even so I'm sure conditions will change over the week

dont you have a new jk now?
No, last time I checked, the Orvis is a ZJ. JKs are overrated anyways :D

Pffffffffffffft..... >:(
-
i think ill be in for this... my tires are 30.9 inches tall so lets round up.
-
I will be there.
I was a helpful guy and pointed out that the McLean store parking lot is closed right now, so Knox decided to meet on McLean trail (the gravel part) just in past the store at the wide spot.
Thanks,
Jeff
-
I think Knox changed my reply above to include some sarcastic humour... :o
Thanks for the update Knox.
-
Nah....he (and by he I mean me)....was just being appreciative of you pointing out something that we should have clued in on while organizing the run. Thank you. :)
-
yeah I forgot the gates to the lot are closed now, I figured people would figure it out. ::)
-
Sounds good guys.
Looking forward to the run...
Jeff

-
I should be able to show up for this.
Looks like I won't be able to make it :(
-
Hmm this is tempting. Was thinking of going out there is weekend, might hookup with you guys if I'm on my own. Gotta pull the ZJ out of mothballs first and see if it still runs though...
-
ill be there as well

I'll be there. Steve.

AstraX

NuxJR
Hps4Evr
XJSteve
W Squared - Tailgunner
Possibles:
LSM

Because we have a good number of experienced members that have volunteered to tail and mid gun as required, we will have the option of splitting the run into two groups if we have a big turnout. If Knox would like to split the group, I will have no issue leading a group of folks on an alternate route selected to match rig and driver abilities.
Knox and I did some scouting today, and McLean is frozen solid. One thing we did notice is that any rutted or off-camber sections that are climbing or descending hills are quite tricky right now - there is just the right amount of snow to let you slide into the ruts and get high centered. We have a tentative route picked out, and will make a firm decision once we get a look at exactly who shows up tomorrow morning.
-
Sorry guys but I won't be able to make it. Last week I put on my snow plow bracket and then promptly forgot about it. Steve.
-
I can't make this one as we will be landing from Mexico at 6:30. I will be ready for the next one with my new Detroit once I hear back from Northridge.

LOL
I hate lol posts, but that's all I got for this one ;D

I have to blowout as I am on a course this weekend and I have my winters on now. I really wanted to go as this would have been the run to qualify me to be a real member. Oh well there is always next year.

I may be a bit slow but what did I miss
-
Awesome run guys!
Absolutely loved Fisher East. This gives me inspiration to be able to run it in the summer with my new 2012 once it is finished being built.
I am finally beginning to understand what people mean by Just Empty Every Pocket. Although these things are all minor I managed a couple things on this run: tore off my evap box (thanks Astra for picking it up I'll have to get you something for Christmas too), my Warn air compressor ceased to work again and it still doesn't work as of yesterday but, this time it doesn't look like the fuse blew. So, I am going to see what I can do about that. It may just become target practice on my acreage outside of Millarville. Finally, both of my right tires are leaking and at least the front one appears to be around the rim (bead). So, I guess I'm bringing both of those in today to have them looked at.
Still, this was one of the best runs I have been on yet. Looking forward to the next one.
Jeff
-
Whoever sold you that Warn should be willing to refund you based on the number of issues you've had with it.
As far as the leaks go, odds are you probably just got some crap stuffed up in the between the wheel and bead - should not be an issue to clean it out.
-
Thanks for the advice W.
Yeah, this is the second one they have given me which I reluctantly accepted to try so I could keep keep my purchases local (I could have purchased it for literally 1/3 the price the next time I was in Colorado which I was only a couple weeks later and I knew I was oging to be). I spoke with them this morning and they are willing to take it back and send it to Warn to look at. If it were me I would refund the consumer since this is the second one that has crapped out after only a couple uses. But, that's why all of my companies are ranked top ten in all of their respective fields. We'll see how things go...
Waiting to get my Jeep back with the tires fixed today. I definately noticed one was leaking from the bead and I tried to clean it but, it continued to leak. Oh well, if they are fixed well I will consider it $30 well spent on each to know they are trail worthy rather than me hoping I fixed them properly only to have problems on the trail...

You don't think they're going to say that maybe the leak is because of the chunks of rim broken off? ;D
Or did you replace those already?
-
Good guess Frenchy!!! But, that rim has been fine for several runs after that happened. Anyway, I just had them rotate the spare in and the one with the chip/chunk out of the rim is now the spare and it will be rotated out with the other spare I have at home...
Anyone want a slightly used rim? ;D
