Title: Tire Chains
Post by: AstraX on December 05, 2011, 05:24:33 PM
I didn't want to clutter up the Boxing day run thread.

Thinking of getting some chains this year for a couple of reasons.  #1 is I'm not locked up so I think a little extra traction might be nice in some instances, and #2 is I'm at about 40% tread on my AT's, but I'm not quite ready to replace my tires (would like to jump straight to a 35" and other things need to be done first).

I saw a post that mentioned Gregg's Distributors.  Any other places in town that carry them?  I see there are a few different styles as well...Standard, V-bar, Studded, etc.  Which would be the best to look at?  The reality of it is I will probably only be using them this winter so I don't want to spend much on them, but I don't want something that is going to fall apart after a couple of uses.

Thanks for the input.

hey i have a set   there V bar

i went out last year on the new years day run with no front drive shaft only 2 wheel drive and these chains allowed me to go anywhere with no issues
even climbed hills that hadnt been passed on all winter

there made for 35s but they fit my co workersd 33/12.5 no problem
so if u plan on going bigger they'll fit 35's

100 $

Chains that are too big can be trimmed down to fit smaller too, within reason of course.  Buddy of mine did that with my chains, originally they fit 35's, trimmed em down to fit 32's and could likely fit the 31's if cammed up enough.

They will be going on my JK 32's.  Can they be made to work?

Also look at Titan Supply, http://www.titansupply.ca/  They have two good names in chains and great pricing.

V-bar ladder style with cam tighteners.  7 or 8 mm chain. Best way to go for off road only use, IME.

I hate to say it, but Al is right.  ;D Unless you have clearance issues that you're really worried about, V-bars are what you want, and Gregg's is the place to get 'em.

If they're going on a stock JK, be very careful with your clearance on the inside sidewall of the rear wheels. They can bootfark your brake and ABS lines in a hurry if you don't pay attention.
