I have an '89 YJ that leaks brake fluid from the tranny. It is apparently the clutch slave. The clutch does lose pressure when used. The part itself is $350 new plus grunt work pulling the tranny and t-case. Has any one had this problem or would it be safe looking for a used part to keep in a low budget? Does anyone actually know how big of a job it is to change in reality???

hey, is that the price from mopar or is that an aftermarket unit. I would see if you can find an aftermarket slave, would probably save ya a bunch. And it depends what type of slave the yjs use. Im not sure since i havnt worked on one but is it an integral style (that sits behind the through-out bearnig) or a fork style where its mounted on the bellhousing. Either way the trany probably needs to come out. So your probably lookin at a good 3-4 hours+, once you have bled the system.

That price of $350 is an aftermarket price through partsource and I am not sure what style it is but I will definetely look into it so that I know...

That is exact same price as there Kit that includes clutch, pressure plate, slave, bearing and alignment tool. That must be what they're quoting you.
Not sure if you can get the slave seperately from them, if not, I'm sure Ken & Lisa have a few kicking around. Can't see it being any more then $40 from them.

That is the first thing I thought but there is no clutch kit with the part cause they gave me a different price for that saying it would be a good time to change the clutch itself. I will call them today and see what they say about going used.

I got a quote for a slave cylinder from those bozo's for around $450 !!! , that was for JUST the slave . Of course , I thought the guy was on glue , after regaining my composure , I asked for a quote on a clutch kit , $300 for the clutch disc , pressure plate , release bearing , pilot bearing and alignment tool. I bought it , the quote for the slave cylinder alone had to have been for a high end , top of the line part .
Either way , for the amount of effort required to replace the slave cylinder , I decided to change the entire clutch . It has been in there for ??????? , let's see , .....it's an 88 YJ ....I bought the Jeep in 2001 W/ 220,000 KM on it , did an AX-15 swap in 2003 using the same clutch , replaced it with the above described clutch kit in Nov 2005 , due to a leaking slave cylinder ( it had been leaking for quite a while ). To my surprise the clutch that was in there was still in good condition !

So in other words, the slave cylinder is a fortune, and before I change my entire clutch (which I was considering), check for wear????
