Whats the best way to go about getting your non-restricted license? I am thinking of taking the course and test all in one shot. Would anyone know of a good place, or smart way to go about it?
-
have you looked into the classes here:
http://theshootingedge.com/#
-
be looking at doing mine too in the new year
new gun club theshootingcentre.com (http://theshootingcentre.com)
also the Wholesale sports in heritage meadows also have someone that does courses
-
Jamal the shooting edge is a great place to take the course. My wife and I took it there but do yourself a favor and take the combined course for both restricted and non restricted as its a better value unless you never plan to own a handgun.

I am here: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=50.954919,-114.120640

Even if you never plan on owning, do them both anyway.
-
yup shooters edge.
-
Or you can ask the guys at Proline in Inglewood... It will cost you less than half than that of the Edge, but they only offer it a few days a year. Was less than 2 bills for a good friend of mine to get her PAL last week.

This. Do it once, get it all out of the way.
-
I can also vouch for the shooting edge...cost around $250, took only one day and was super easy...(I got both too). Now the Gov't side of things is not so easy...that took around 3 months of waiting and jumping through hoops...but it came eventually...
On a side note who the hell decided that a firearms liscence should be pink, purple and pastel blue??? Ghey!

Get your RPAL as well if you have the cash to do so. It is something you are better to have then not. With the way the thing is run a non restricted firearm can become a restricted at anytime. ex my buddy bout a 410 several years ago. this year they deemed it restricted because it has a rotary magazine and the stock is to pistol grip styled. he was all good because he had is RPAL but there are other guys that have the gun are scrambling to get the course.
A bunch of us on here did the course about a year ago, we did both in one day. I think we where no more than 2 hours more, and the practical is what took the time.

Going shooting today. Competed in the US while I was down there and I cant believe how difficult it is to do anything gun related up here any more...
Totally agree, get both certs at once. I have been told you can just write the exam(s) if you want without the course(s) if you know your stuff (will find out today).
Smith & Wesson AR15A (100 round mags)
Springfield M1A with 20 round mags (don't want to be within 1000 yards of my site)
Saiga 12 gauge (12 and 15 round mags yes, that is a mag fed 12 gauge!!!) (Russian by-the-way; picture 12 gauge ak-47)
Springfield XD in 45ACP (13 round mags) XDM in 9mm (19 round mags)
This is just a taste by the way... Unfortunately, all are still in Colorado because the mags make them illegal here and I didn't want the hassle at the border for just the guns. I miss them more than my ex-wfie!!!

So now that I got the licence,
The paper that accompanied states that it must be carried with the licence since it lists the conditions...mine just says "standard conditions"...do you still need to tote around both the licence and the piece of paper?
-
I don't believe so. I only carry my licence and the "card" for the firearm I have in my possession to prove ownership. If carrying a restricted firearm, you need to carry your transportation papers as well. I laminate those so they don't get destroyed.
-
I'm with Specialk on this. I carry my PAL, the registrations certs for whatever firearms I have with me, and my long term ATT if I'm bringing a restricted with me.
With the long gun registry on the way out, it's not likely that any law enforcement officer (be it fish+feathers or police) would have an issue with not having your registration certs with you....but nobody ever got themselves into a bind by following the letter of the law.
-
I carry the gay pink and purple card in the wallet all the time. And for hunting always bring the same three with me so registration cards are all in a side pouch. For gogher shooting same thing all three cards are in the side pouches depending what 22 going to use. For the long range target stuff i have dedicated cases with certs inside. For the restricteds all atts forms, registrations for all restricted are in a dedicated pouch. So there i just grab the pouch that has everything depending what I am bringing to the range that day. And yes we have some stupid gun laws but then so do our neighbors down south.

I did all the firearm courses and hunter safty through alberta hunter ed. Everything is on donatition so if you are on a budgit then just donate.

Yep, the paperwork isn't all that hard.
And once the in's n out's of the system are learned, the rest of it is easy, just a PITA.
Carry the license, it has the conditions, PAL, RPAL, PPAL (if you have such a thing, lucky!)
I carry photocopies of each reg, in each case. That way opening one case has all the paperwork for the rest of the cases. Same with the ATT.
Plus a copy of each goes into the glove box. That way my transport also has a copy, so I don't need to dive into a case, should I be asked.
Of course, copies of each are in the safe at home. Plus in the safety deposit box at the bank with all my other valuable paperwork.
I second doing the course at Proline in Inglewood. The instructors are usually from Edmonton. They are awesome. The course used to be run once/twice a month. PAL on Saturday, RPAL on Sunday. A decent way to spend a weekend. Cover thy butt, get both. Makes it easier should you want to use the other half of your license.
When I did mine, the PAL was in the morning, and the RPAL was in the afternoon. They run a short challenge-based course as well.
Though, I'm looking at getting a membership down at the new range, www.theshootingcentre.com . Their video range looks pretty darn cool. Plus, satisfies the other half of the RPAL condition of "recreational target shooting".
I don't mind the restricted portion on handguns, it makes sense, they've been heavily documented for a long time. The part I disagree with is the emotional, non-scientific basis for long guns to be restricted. That part angers me. Plus, civilians, in this country, do not need full rock and roll. Though fun, completely non-practicle.

I'm taking my PAL next weekend with 4PLAYZJ (Will) at the Firearm Center in the NE... http://www.firearmcentre.ca/
IT's a full day course.
I'm reading the book now.
I will not have any needs for RPAL... I'll do it later if I do.
Does anyone have taken thier course there or have heard of any bad ref. about them?
-
The Shooting Centre is a great range. That is where I have my membership. The cinema range is a blast... literally. Video games with live ammo!

Agreed, the entry price seems a bit high but once you r in there you will want to stay the day.
Moving targets, way quieter than the range (bigger room) and way fun. Loved it!

Perhaps we should take some photo's of some of our memberships "Jeeps of Shame", replace the boar or deer on the video screen with the "Jeeps of Shame" ??? ;D ;D ;D
Though, since I live up in the north side of town, I'm thinking of the BTSA. Their range is right near Deerfoot mall for pistols and rimfires, and I'm willing to go out to their big range at Sibbald.
Something about sighting in at 100 or 200 yds, inside, doesn't appeal to me.
-
FYI...Firearm Center were great bunch of folks.
It was supposed to take all day but by 13:oo I was out of there.
I would recommend them for sure!!
now it's the waiting game.... :(
